BLADE RUNNER (1982) - The Blimp Shot Matte PhotographThe matte photograph for the famous blimp shot from Ridley Scott's sci-fi classic Blade Runner. Matte photographs are often used by visual effects artists to create a seamless blend with live-action photography, negating the need for a physical set. LA's iconic Bradbury Building was the location for Sebastian's (William Sanderson) apartment. Scott shot the building's oft-filmed atrium in a memorably novel manner, and it served as a haunting backdrop to several sequences. The photograph depicts the atrium's cathedral-like central court; a domed Victorian plate glass roof; decorative terracotta; filigree balustrades; birdcage elevator shafts; and wrought-iron balconies. This matte was used for the scene in which a blimp flew overhead and was visible through the skylight before Deckard (Harrison Ford) entered Sebastian's apartment. The photograph has been carefully removed from its glass pane for conservation and is now displayed in a black wooden frame behind acrylic. It can easily be re-laid on its original glass pane, or the pane can be shipped separately should the buyer so wish.
