Two Chinese carved boxwood mirrors20th centuryEach with elaborate openwork carved borders featuring figures, dragons, architectural features, and floral motifs, with modern mirror plates, each approx. 56 x 68cm. (2)二十世紀 黃楊木雕鏡框兩件Condition Report: Both with expected scattered nibbles and small losses to extremities and a few reattached chips. Expected areas of age cracks,  particularly a large split to the top crest of one mirror. The same mirror with loose joints which have been re glued, causing the mirror to be slightly loose within the frame. the second mirror also with re gluing to joints but overall less loose. Theo same mirror has extensive paper backing to the reverse, presumably to add stability to the carving.

Kevorkian Collection label to reverse, no. 2594The gul-o-bul-bul, or rose and nightingale, motif was employed in both Persian literature and painting. In poetry, the two stood in for the beloved and the loved, entwined in either an earthly or divine union. In art, the motif appeared on all types of objects, and during the Qajar period proliferated to the extent that it came practically to symbolize the country itself. It became especially popular among European collectors, who demanded goods and albums decorated with this motif. Shiraz, where this drawing might have been made, was an important center for the production of architectural tiles in this genre as well.Condition Report: With significant losses to paper particularly to top border; staining thoughout; remains of masking tape, corners cut; reverse

General knocks, wear and scratches throughout commensurate with age and use. Some losses to moulding in places. Two pulls lacking, with others misshapen. Pulls appear later. Shelves lacking with later hanging fittings. Drawers run generally smoothly, with a couple of splits and areas of wear to interiors. Joints sound and solid. Overall in fair cosmetic and good structural condition and very usable in its current state.

The piercing at the top would allow attachment to a register of faience tiles representing lotus, rosettes, and grape frieze. French Four Glass mid 19th Century crystal regulator in a rectangular brass case with sculptured architectural plinth and cornice mouldings. Bevelled glass panels to sides. White enamelled dial with black roman numerals and blued steel moon hands. An 8-day two train movement, stamped Hy Marc Paris,  striking the hours and single strike to the half hour on a bell. Adjustable twin-flask mercury compensated pendulum. Backplate stamped with registration number 60183. With key.

She works mostly with fluorescent paper strips using paper quilling techniques, and playing with paper and light. Born in Paris, France in 1976, she has spent most of her life travelling, finally settling in London in 2006. Following a degree in Art History & Fine Art with an emphasis on paper, bookbinding and packaging, Caro went on to receive a BFA in Graphic Design & Photography from SCAD (Savannah College of Art & Design) in 1998. Caro's work emphasises the delicacy of paper versus its architectural structure within a minimalist setting.
