LOPES, Duarte; PIGAFETTA, Filippo.- RELATIONE | DEL REAME DI CONGO | ET DELLE | CIRCONVICINE CONTRADE | Tratta dalli Scritti & ragionamenti | di Odoardo | Lopez Portoghese. | PER FILIPPO PIGAFETTA | Con disegni uari di Geografia di | piante, d’habiti, d’animali, & altro...- In Roma: Apresso Bartolomeo Grassi, s.d. [1591].- [8], 82, [1, 1 br.] p.: 8 gravuras, 2 mapas desdobr. [em falta]; 20 cm.- E., Original edition of the first description of the Kingdom of Congo, by the Portuguese explorer and merchant Duarte Lopes (fl. 1578), born in Benavente. The author, who left Lisbon for Africa in 1578, would occupy an influential position with the Catholic King of Congo, D. Álvaro, who commissioned him to represent him with Philip II of Spain and Pope Sixtus V. Upon his arrival in Rome, Duarte Lopes met the Italian humanist and traveler Filippo Pigafetta (1533-1604) to whom he dictated his narrative, which he published in the present edition in 1591. The work achieved great success, having been translated into several languages and integrated in the first part of Theodore de Bry's "Petits Voyages", published in 1597 (in German) and in 1598 (in Latin). The edition opens with a copperplate printed architectural frontispiece (verso in white), which includes the coat of arms of D. Antonio Migliore, bishop of San Marco to whom it was dedicated; followed by the dedication (f. [2 and 3]), dated 7 August 1591, and the "Tavola de’ capitoli" (f. [4]); the text extends over the next 82 pages and ends with a record (f. k6r, blank verso). At the end, there are eight double-page engravings (22x33 cm) representing a palm tree, a zebra and indigenous customs (6). The two fold-out maps of Congo and Africa, which unfortunately are not present, should also be found at the end of the volume. Second engraving (zebra) with missing lower margin. Exemplary with some foxing and occasional tidal stains on the lower margin (and some corners) of about 16 leaves. Some minor imperfections that do not affect the integrity of the volume. Full flexible parchment contemporary binding, with damage to the lower half of the spine (recoverable). It retains the original endpapers (with a French bookseller's stamp on the first pastedown). Barbosa Machado, I., p. 733. Brunet, IV, col. 651. Graesse, IV, p. 289. D. Manuel II Library, RES 35. Vide: "Relação do Reino do Congo e das terras circunvizinhas", facsimile edition, with a preface by Rosa Capeans (Lisbon, Agência Geral das Colónias, 1949).

JESUS, Frei Rafael de, O.S.B.- CASTRIOTO | LVSITANO | PARTE I. | ENTREPRESA, E RESTAVRAÇAÕ | de Pernambuco; & das Capitanias Confinantes. VARIOS, E BELLICOS SVCCESSOS CASTRIOTO | ENTRE PORTUGUEZES, E BELGAS. | ACONTECIDOS PELLO DISCURSO DE VINTE E QUATRO ANNOS, E | tirados de noticias, relações, & memorias certas.- Lisboa: Na Impressaõ de Antonio Craesbeeck de Mello, 1679.- [18], 701, [47] p.: 1 gravura; 27 cm.- E., First edition of a work based on the manuscript of the "Historia da guerra de Pernambuco e feitos memoraveis do Mestre de Campo João Fernandes Vieira", by Diogo Lopes Santiago, which only came to be published in 1875-1880. In fact, it is a compliment by Vieira, nicknamed Castrioto in allusion to the Albanian hero and king George Castrioto, who at the time was a very popular figure in Portugal. The author (1640-1693), a Benedictine monk, born in Guimarães, was the main chronicler of the Kingdom, being responsible for writing the seventh part of the "Monarquia Lusitana". The volume initially includes an engraved and etched (very trimmed, with loss of subscription and reinforced margins on the back) portrait of Vieira with architectural framing. The title page has a restoration over the entire width of the lower margin (25x195 mm), tangentially affecting the imprint date. The specimen is somewhat trimmed, but generally clean, complete and solid, retaining the rare portrait. Recent full sheepskin binding, with patina and gold tooling in the manner of the period ("à la Duseuil"). Inocêncio, VII, p. 48. Samodães, 1632. Borba de Moraes, p. 427 (rare). Auvermann, 1062. Arouca, J 17.

Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Lloyd's Building in London" Signed lower left. Original watercolor/ink painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Great Britain Europa 1987 Modern Art - Architecture stamp issued May 12, 1987. Richard Rogers is Great Britain's most famous architect. Born in 1933, he studied at the Architectural Association School in London and at the Yale School of Architecture in New Haven, Connecticut. He also constructed the Lloyd's Building in London. When looking at this building, it is apparent that Rogers exposes functional parts of the structure most architects would work hard to cover up. Among the most dramatic features of the Lloyd's Building are the external glass-sided observation lifts, which were used for the first time in a British building as a main means of vertical transportation. Image Size: 12 x 14 in. Overall Size: 20 x 15 in. Unframed. (B11055)

Repton (Humphry) Designs for the Pavilion at Brighton, second edition, 9 aquatint plates, (of which 2 folding, one with 3 small marginal tears), 12 aquatint vignettes and illustrations, all uncoloured, lacking moveable overslips, off-setting, some browning, mainly marginal, very occasional spotting, some margins a little creased, contemporary wrappers, covers detached, lacks spine, surface soiling and scuffing, a few marginal defects, modern card portfolio, [Tooley 397], folio, J. C. Stadler, [watermarked 1822].⁂ Humphry Repton (1752-1818) was commissioned in 1805 by the then Prince of Wales (future George IV) to redesign his Marine Pavilion. Inspired by the contemporary vogue for all things Indian - by the temples, palaces and gardens of the Hindustan - Repton produced a suite of detailed and beautiful designs. Despite the Prince's initial enthusiasm, however, neither Repton's architectural nor garden designs came to fruition, with John Nash (1752 - 1823) instead receiving the official commission. Recouping financial losses from the project, this publication was conceived, and this edition was reissued in 1822 to coincide with Nash's completion of the Royal Pavilion.
