The Corinthian order is the last developed of the three principal classical orders of ancient Greek and Roman architecture. The Corinthian, with its offshoot, the Composite, is the most ornate of the orders and is characterised by the slender, fluted columns and elaborate capitals decorated with acanthus leaves and scrolls. Candelabra were used for decoration in larger, wealthier homes and specifically on dining tables for formal occasions. The height and grandeur of the candelabra were practical for creating more light than a single candlestick, but they were designed primarily for aesthetic purposes and the desire to create a lavish item of silverware that would double as a centrepiece on a table.
