A George III oak longcase clock, signed Whitehurst, Derby, square brass dial with cast rococo spandrels, silvered chapter ring, date aperture, eight-day movement, striking on a bell, the case with a broken architectural pediment, arched long door with a marquetry star motif, panelled plinth, bracket feet.

* Bath - John Wood, the Elder. A vellum deed relating to the Southgate district of Bath in Somerset, 13th July 1739, in respect of purchase of land by John Wood the Elder (1704-1754) and in contract with James Leake, bookseller in Bath and Evelyn, Duke of Kingston, eng. decorative initial, some soiling and wear to folds with loss of legibility, a second membrane with a hand-col. plan of the proposed development and related text beneath, two seals and signatures present for John Wood and Kingston (somewhat faded), the seal and signature of Leake no longer visible, map size approx. 54 x 75cm, overall a little soiled, endorsed. John Wood, the Elder, was born in Yorkshire, but is best known for his architectural work in Bath. He was responsible for the north and south Parades, Queen’s Square, the Circus, Prior Park and a number of other Georgian houses. His son, John Wood the Younger (1728-82) designed the Royal Crescent and the Assembly Rooms, also completing the building work on the Circus after his father’s death. The map attached to this document shows the River Avon bordering areas called the Meadow called the Ham and Abby Orchard, etc., and covers what is now the newly developed Southgate shopping district.
