He began his architectural apprenticeship in 1897 under Anrew Granger Heiton of Perth in 1897, completeing it under James Smart of Perth several years later. Thereafter he moved to Edinburgh, working successively in the offices of Francis William Deas and Sir Robert Rowand Anderson as junior assistant, and with School Board architect John Alexander Carfrae as principal assistant, which enabled him to study at the Edinburgh School of Applied Art. In 1904 he appears as a draughtsman in HM Office of Works in Edinburgh moving to London as Senior Draughtsman thereafter, but soon returned to Edinburgh to take up a permanent post as Assistant Architect and Surveyor in the branch office on 1 June 1907. He was admitted LRIBA in the mass intake of 20 July 1911. By 1931 he had returned to H M Office of Works in London. J.T. Galletly`s son, James, would follow him as an architect commencing his studies at Edinburgh College of Art under John Begg in 1926. After passing the intermediate exam in June 1929, receiving a bronze medal for Construction, he spent two years working in an as yet unidentified office as improver, before completing the final year of his diploma in 1932 and passing the RIBA qualifying exam in the same year. He was admitted ARIBA early the following year, during his time as a post-graduate student in the Department of Civic Design at the School of Art. In 1937 he was appointed to the teaching staff of the School of Architecture at Robert Gordon`s College. A George III white statuary marble and marmo Siena brocatello mounted chimney piece, circa 1780, the stepped mantel above a frieze with central relief carved tablet with swagged, twin handled urn, flanked by Siena inset fluted sections running to projecting columnar jambs, with relief carved urn panels above, 137cm high, 180cm wide, 25.5cm protrudence. The frieze of this chimneypiece is of a design that appears in one form or another fairly regularly in English chimneypieces of the period. With central relief carved tablet often decorated thematically to match the room it was designed for, standing proud from the rest of the frieze with further projecting elements, usually with subsidiary themes above the jambs. These ‘breakfront’ elements then dictated the shape of the mantel above, in effect enforcing a triple breakfront of projections. Compare lot 164, Christie‘s South Kensington, the Michael Roberts Collection, 27th September 2004 for a similar mantel and frieze arrangement. The columnar jambs upon which the outer projections rest reinforce the imposing presence of the piece, in effect bringing the fireplace frontage further off the wall and into the room. The architectural nature of the supports was also often a reflection of the wider decorative scheme of the room in which the chimneypiece was installed. See lots 714 and 738, Christie’s London, the T.Crowther & Son Collection, 12th-14th October 1992 for comparable examples. Provenance: The collection of the late John Fane
