Johannes Christiaan Karel Klinkenberg (Dutch, 1852-1924), Dutch Canal Scene, signed lower right "Klinkenberg", oil on canvas, 48 x 68cm (19 x 27in). Johannes Christiaan Karel Klinkenberg was a pupil of Christoffel Bisschop (1828-1904) and Louis Meijer. He became a member of the Pulchri studio and went on to win many prizes. A street bears his name in the area of Dutch painters in Overtoomse Veld-Noord, Amsterdam. Klinkenberg specialized in historical town views, often bathing them in sunlight or reflected in the water of a canal or harbour. His contemporaries admired him for the effects he made with sunlight on brick, sandstone and roofs. Many Dutch towns were painted by him and the topographical recognisability and the impressionistic way of his painting gave him an honourable place in the rich tradition of architectural pictorial art. Klijkenberg`s work is in the Rijksmuseum and Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam
