AN INDIAN HEADSMAN'S SWORD, TEGHA, EARLY 19TH CENTURY with characteristically broad blade double-edged for its upper third, cut with a series of etched fullers, chiselled on each side with scrolling foliage behind the tip, elephant masks and shaped panels in the centre, an architectural framework with further elephants at the base, and all highlighted with gold koftgari, large steel hilt boldly chiselled with foliage over its surface, and fitted with a brass rosette washer on each side 73.4cm; 28 7/8in blade Provenance The P. Holstein Collection, sold Hotel Drouot, Paris, 8 May 1957, lot 29 ++The blade remains in good condition with only small areas of light wear. The koftgari is in generally good condition. The hilt has areas of light wear. The pommel has some very small holes.
A TURKISH SILVER-MOUNTED KILIG, LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY with curved blade widening and double-edged towards the tip, reinforced along the back-edge of the lower portion, decorated in gold koftgari with a tughra, a circular calligraphic panel, a further calligraphic panel and the gold-lined bladesmith's mark on one side at the forte and with further inscriptions and celestial motifs on the other (losses), silver hilt comprising cross-piece with bud-shaped terminals, chased with foliage on each side and trophies in the centre, silver back-strap chased with a running pattern of vine foliage and fruit, and a pair of ivory grip scales retained by three rivets and a silver tear-shaped washer at the top, in an associated wooden scabbard entirely encased in silver repousée with scrolls, foliage and flowerheads and the chape decorated with an architectural vignette surrounded by further scrolls and flowerheads on each side 67.5cm; 26 5/8in blade The inscriptions read, in translation: There is no youth [as brave as] 'Ali, no sword [as sharp as] dhu'l-faqar' and include the shahada, the names of the Seven Sleepers and their dog and the tughra of possibly Muhammad V (1327-36/1909-18) ++The blade has areas of light wear and the gold has losses as mentioned in the catalogue description. The crosspiece and back strap are in good condition. The grips have small age cracks. The scabbard has small dents, minor cracks along the seam and some small holes at the base.
William Lee-Hankey (1869-1952) 'Le Connaisseur des Fleurs Etaples', etching, signed in pencil, and bears blind stamp monogram, 21cm x 16cm . Lee-Hankey was born in Chester and studied at the Royal College of Art and later in Paris. He produced a series of etchings of Breton subjects including architectural and figure studies.
Augustus Osborne Lamplough (1877-1930) 'Arab dhows on the Nile', watercolour, signed 24cm x 63cm also the companion 'A view of The Pyramids, Cairo' - a pair (2) Lamplough was born in Chester and studied at the local art school. He specialised in architectural subjects and painted in Venice in his early career though concentrated on North African scenes from 1902. He lectured at Leeds Art School.
A Fabulous 16th Century Flemish School Oil on Copper: An interior scene featuring a Mother tendering holding her Child stood by an open window with landscape beyond, 13 ins x 17½ ins (34 cms x 44 cms). In a glazed box frame with a gilt wood architectural inner border above a plaque engraved E.J GOSSEART. 24 ins x 19¾ ins(62 cms x 50 cms).
An Unusual 17th Century Salisbury Armchair. The demi-lune crested top rail with carved fanned centre; highlighted with punchwork. The back panel centred by a vertical diamond beneath an arcaded facade with architectural columns. The flat curved & scroll-end arms raised on short tapered columns adjoining the plank seat above carved & punch-worked frieze. The turned legs joined by block stretchers.
A 16th/17th Century Cedarwood Panel. The Adige Chest front divided by moulding into two panels depicting pen-work court scenes silhouetted against a recessed mesh punched ground and flanked by gentlemen standing under architectural domed facades. The centre depicting a heraldic crest flanked by a lion & unicorn. 34¼ ins (87 cms) x 69 ins (175 cms).
A Good Teco Pottery terracotta vase shouldered form with four looped handles, covered in a pale green matt glaze impressed Teco twice 32.5cm. high. The Teco range was introduced as an artistic line in 1900 by Gates Potteries, a subsidiary of American Terra Cotta and Ceramic Company. The production is generally architectural bearing the influence of local Chicago architects including Frank Lloyd Wright who supplied some of its designs.
