JAMES GOMME (1817) ASKEATON CASTLE ON THE RIVER DEEL COUNTY LIMERICK, signed, dated 1817, inscribed ASKEYON [sic] and Hammersmith verso, panel 12 x 17.5cm The artist could well be identified with James Gomme (1726-1825) a furniture maker of High Wycombe and Hammersmith and a keen member of the Society of Antiquaries. A somewhat eccentric figure, he was a friend of Edmund Burke and issued his own token coinage. Clearly by an untrained hand, but given the amount of detail depicted, the present panel is obviously by one interested in the architectural heritage so beloved of that learned society. It is likely that it was copied, perhaps from an engraving, which may explain the misspelt title. A remarkably similar view of the castle, painted by Samuel Frederick Brocas (c1792-1847) is illustrated Laffan (W, editor), Painting Ireland: topographical views from Glin Castle, 2006, plt 45. Mellors & Kirk is very grateful for the assistance of Andrew Moore of the National Gallery of Ireland in the cataloguing of this lot. ++The varnish in need of a light clean but in otherwise good condition, the panel not warped or cracked in fine quality parcel gilt walnut and oak frame
