Civil Engineer and Architect’s Journal, vols. 1-22 (of 30), 1837-59, wood-eng. illusts. and folding plts. (lib. inkstamp to some plts.), including buildings, plans and railway interest, fraying to some leaves, uniform recent cloth gilt 4to, together with eighteen duplicates in contemp. bindings. The periodical was founded by William Laxton and edited by him and by his brother, Henry. It survived for 30 years and provides one of the best sources of information on a period of extraordinary development in the building world. There are articles on diverse subjects, from a permanent way for railways or the practical advantages of super-heating steam to discussions of church architecture and furniture design. Plans, sections and elevations of recent buildings are given as well as illustrations of railway stations and patent suspension bridge designs, and there is much material on building technology from roman cement and lime mortar to new developments in heating and ventilation. Many of the major architectural writers and critics of the day contributed, notably Loudon writing under the pseudonym of “Candidus”, and its critical stance combined with its wealth of technical information helped to ensure its survival down to 1868 in the face of competition from more lavishly illustrated periodicals such as ‘The Builder’. The journal was published monthly except during 1851 when it appeared weekly, giving coverage of the Great Exhibition. (40)
