A 19th Century Victorian large and impressive slate marble mantel clock of architectural form by J Marti & Co France. The black dial having gilt brass chapter ring and faceted hands. Adorned with gilt brass ormolu plaques and face masks to sides. The movement bearing makers stamp. Measures 44cm x 49cm by 20cm.
Henry VIII.- Necessary Doctrine and Erudition for Any Christen Man (A) Set Furthe by the Kynges Maiestie of Englande &c., black letter, title within woodcut architectural border, woodcut initials, A1 (title and contents p.) window-mounted, first four ff. with single worm hole to text affecting a few letters, M3 lower corner restored, M4 with very short neatly repaired tear to foot, occasional soiling and damp-staining, mostly marginal, modern calf, [STC 5174], by Thomas Berthelet, 29th May 1543.⁂ The so-called King's Book, with preface by Henry VIII, that set out and defined the doctrine of the new English Church. This the issue with no unit of price on U4 recto.
Agriculture.- Mascall (Leonard) The First Booke of Cattell, 3 parts in 1 vol., first edition, lacked initial blank and 2ff. following 2D5 (?cancels), pagination erratic but seemingly otherwise complete, largely printed in black letter, woodcut device to first title, titles of second and third parts within woodcut architectural borders, woodcut initials and head-pieces, the odd spot but a very good, clean copy overall, contemporary calf, sympathetically rebacked, [STC 17580; Fussell I, p.9 for 1596 ed.], small 4to, by John Wolfe, 1587.⁂ The rare first edition, ESTC cites only the BL copy in UK (curiously, not this copy) and 3 in America (Folger, Huntington and Michigan State). Fussell calls the work "important, but, in common with most of the writers of his and the succeeding century, Mascall had no hesitation in borrowing from earlier writers, and I doubt if he ever challenged their authority."
Constantius (Felicius) The Conspiracie of Catiline, written by Constantius, Felicius, Durantinus, and translated bi Thomas Paynell: with The Historye of Jugurth, writen by the Famous Romaine Salust, and translated into Englyshe by Alexander Barcklaye, 2 parts in 1 vol., second edition, black letter, first part with title within woodcut architectural border and with final blank, woodcut initials, neat paper repair to verso of title and margin of C3, small repaired hole in a4 and b3 and rust-marks on n2 and n3 of second part, affecting a few letters of text, very occasional light scattered spotting but a largely clean copy overall with good margins, ink ownership inscription to endpaper, bookplate to pastedown, late nineteenth-century crushed brown morocco, gilt, by W.Pratt, spine gilt in compartments, covers with oval gilt centrepieces, a little rubbed, g.e., [Pforzheimer 363; STC 10752], small 4to, J. Waley, [1557]⁂ The first combined edition, we can trace only two complete copies at auction in the last 70 years including this one. Provenance: Henry H. Gibbs (ink inscription dated 1860 to endpaper and Aldenham House bookplate to pastedown).
Vives (Joannes Ludovicus ) A Very Fruteful and Pleasant Booke called the Instruction of a Christen Woman, translated by Richard Hyrde, black letter, title within architectural woodcut border, woodcut initials and tail-piece, full-page woodcut on A4 verso, title lightly soiled with short tear to foot and small portion of restoration to centre, not affecting text, gathering B with worming to top corner of text, D4 with neat vertical slash running through text, 2N4 with minor repairs to margins, occasional marginal worming to upper corner, occasional marking or soiling, 19th century calf, neatly rebacked, preserving original backstrip, gilt stamp to upper cover, g.e., small 4to, T. Berthelet, 1557 [colophon dated 1541].⁂ A seemingly unrecorded issue, with the title page a preliminaries matching STC 24861 and the main text and colophon STC 24858. Spanish by birth, Vives was much respected and patronised by Catherine of Aragon, eventually appointed to instruct her daughter Princess Mary (to whom this work is dedicated) in polite literature and Latin. Richard Hyrde was humanist scholar, attached to the household of Thomas More, who did much to promote female education. Provenance: John Louis Goldsmid (1789-1835, publisher and collector of romances and early historical works (gilt stamp)).
Turkey.- Knolles (Richard) The Generall Historie of the Turkes, from the first beginning of that Nation to the rising of the Othoman Familie: with all the notable expeditions of the Christian Princes against them. Together with the Lives and Conquests of the Othoman Kings and Emperours..., fifth edition, title within engraved architectural border, 33 engraved illustrations in text (32 portraits and 1 battle scene), woodcut initials, head- and tail-pieces, with initial blank f., occasional light browning, the odd spot, but a very good copy generally, contemporary speckled calf, corners bumped, [Blackmer 920; STC 15055; not in Atabey], folio, Adam Islip, 1638.⁂ "Knolles spent twelve years on the completion of his great history, which is based on the works of such authorities as Busbecq, Giovio, Georgievitz, Barletius etc. One of his most important sources is Boissard: Vitae et Icones Sultanorum, from which the portraits were re-engraved... Knolles' work was greatly praised by Dr. Johnson and its influence was acknowledged by Byron" - Blackmer.
Thomas (William) Principal rules of the Italian grammer, with a dictionarie for the better vnderstandynge of Boccace, Pethrarcha, and Dante, third edition, title within woodcut architectural border, woodcut initials, worm hole to last 3ff., but a remarkably clean and excellent copy otherwise, 19th century half calf, spine gilt with monogram stamp to head, [STC 24022], small 4to, in aedibus H.Wykes, 1567.⁂ An excellent copy of this scarce work. he third edition of the first Italian dictionary and book of grammar published in England. Thomas did much to popularise the language and history of Italy with this work and his Historie of Italie. He was later hanged, drawn and quartered for his alleged part in Wyatt's rebellion of 1553-1554.Provenance: Arthur Blundell Sandys Trumbull Hill, 3rd Marquess of Downshire (1788-1845, Anglo-Irish peer, strong supporter of the Irish language (gilt monogram stamp)).
˜A PERSIAN DAGGER (KHANJAR), DATED (12)57 AH, CIRCA 1842 the first with curved double-edged blade formed with a medial ridge, marine ivory hilt carved with figures in traditional dress within an architectural framework and with the date (rubbed, age cracks), in a green fabric-covered scabbard; the second with recurved blade and green stone hilt carved with a horse's head, in its scabbard, the third with wavy blade, in its engraved brass scabbard; and five further daggers the first: 26.4 cm; 10 3/8 in blade (8)
‡ A FINE PUZZLE PADLOCK OF EXHIBITION QUALITY, FIRST QUARTER OF THE 19TH CENTURY, PROBABLY VIENNA formed entirely of steel, with robust pivoting hasp, the inner and outer faces each decorated with an architectural framework, complete with its key 20.5 cm; 8 in high (2) A series of related but less elaborate examples are illustrated in Thomas Hölzel's treatise, Abbildungen von Schlosserwaaren im neuesten Wiener, Pariser und Londner Geschmack, Teil 1, 1827. Padlocks with puzzles first appeared around 1800. The combination of discrete slides, flaps and bolts served to delay unwanted access. At the same time industrial mass production took over the industry with Jeremiah Chubb in England and Linus Yale in America creating designs which continue as the basis for many locks today. In the middle of the century Franz Wertheim began making fireproof safes in Vienna, with elaborate publicity stunts including setting fire to his products to demonstrate their resilience. The 20,000th Wertheim cash till was manufactured in 1869 and was celebrated by Josef Strauss's Feuerfest [fire-proof] polka.
‡ A FINE PUZZLE PADLOCK OF EXHIBITION QUALITY, FIRST QUARTER OF THE 19TH CENTURY, PROBABLY VIENNA formed entirely of steel, with robust pivoting hasp, the outer face decorated with an architectural framework incorporating a clock face with brass inlaid roman numerals, a pair of pierced block-shaped basal mouldings, complete with its key 18.0 cm; 7 1/8 in high (2) Literature The Antique Lock Collector, vol. 36, No. 1, 2014, pp. 16-22. The padlock is opened by the following procedure: set the time to a quarter past eleven o' clock, slide the diamond-shaped pointer beneath the clock up, slide the smaller rectangular plate beneath to the left, open the clock face, pull the ball next to the triangular block on the left down, pull the corresponding ball on the right down and simultaneously pull the central triangular block down, insert and turn the key, on the reverse of the lock slide the middle plate up, push the bottom bar left and release the shackle.
‡ A FINE GREEK DECORATED SILVER-GILT HOLSTER FOR A PAIR OF KUBUR PISTOLS, EARLY 19TH CENTURY the outer face covered with red velvet faced with a pierced and chased silver-gilt panel decorated with a symmetrical design of scrolling tendrils, flowers and foliage enclosing a central architectural panel 30.5 cm; 12 in Openwork designs of this type were popular on domestic items made in the Ionian Islands and are also encountered on firearms such as blunderbusses. See Elgood 2009, p. 174, no. 212.
An emerald flower head bangle by Cazzaniga, the hinged bangle with half textured finish, the five graduated two colour flower heads each set with a circular cabochon emerald, signed Cazzaniga Roma, and stamped 750, inner width 5.7cm, 76.8g gross Angelo Cazzaniga opened the first Gioielleria Cazzaniga in Rome in 1919, selling his own distinct jewellery designs inspired by the artistic and architectural history of Rome. Gioielleria Cazzaniga is today run by the third generation of the Cazzaniga family, and continues to manufacture their distinctive jewellery from their gallery in Passeggiata di Ripetta in the centre of Rome.
John Roberts, Dartmouth, a rare shuttlecock automata longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell, with the thirteen-inch painted break-arch dial having black Roman hour numerals with the centre having a subsidiary seconds dial and signed for the maker John Roberts, Dartmouth and painted to each corner with a depiction of a flint house with tower, the arch having a painted scene of a couple playing badminton within a garden, the shuttlecock moving between each player's racquet with each beat of the clock, the mahogany case with canted corners to the trunk, a curved moulding to the trunk door, boxwood stringing to the base and trunk, the hood having an architectural pediment with a brass eagle-and-ball finial between and columns with cast-brass capitals, all standing on bracket feet, height 226cms. * Biography John Roberts is recorded as working as a watch & clockmaker in Dartmouth in 1793. There are several vertical splits in the ivory and some small areas across the painting where the paint is lifting. The painting is framed and glazed. The frame has the odd minor knock and loss commensurate with age.
