CARTIER: ART DECO GEM-SET ROCK CRYSTAL BANGLE, CIRCA 1930Each ruby cabochon within an engraved mount of Persian inspiration, with graduated emerald, ruby and sapphire cabochons in pinched collet settings, atop the tiered rock crystal, with ridges to the spine, tapering to a black lacquer hinge, signed Cartier Paris, maker's mark HL for Henri Lavabre, numbered, French assay marks, inner circumference approximately 15.5cm, Footnotes:If 1920s jewels are characterised by simple, flat and geometric motifs, jewels of the 1930s are distinguishable by their sculptural, much bolder forms. Rainbows of vari-coloured gemstones were replaced with subtle accents of colour, sprinkled against dramatic monochrome themes in onyx, black lacquer, diamonds, platinum and rock crystal. The solid, yet transparent quality of rock crystal creates a unique visual effect with light, sparkling like sunshine through cascading water, allowing jewellers to carve voluminous, architectural forms that retained a sense of delicacy and lightness. This exquisite bangle combines 1930s sculpturesque opulence with Cartier's distinctive use of Persian decorative motifs. Significant archaeological discoveries during the second half of the 19th century led to a rediscovery of civilisations beyond Europe's borders. By the turn of the 20th century, Islamic art had become a field of study and inspiration for museums, artists, musicians, dancers, such as the Ballet Russes, and jewellers, such as Cartier. Jacques Cartier travelled extensively throughout India and the Persian Gulf, and Louis Cartier was equally inspired by Islamic art collections in the Louvre and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs' 'Oriental Rooms'. The resulting relationship between Cartier and the East was longstanding and prolific, with Persian and Mughal-inspired motifs appearing in their jewels from the dawn of the 1900s to the 1930s. Accompanied by a document from IAJA Expertise stating that the bangle is by Cartier. It is a pseudoperipteral temple built in the Corinthian order and – according to the description given by the architectural writer Vitruvius - represents a nearly textbook example of a Roman templeA careful reconstruction of a dedicatory inscription on the temple in 1758 led scholars to believe it was built in dedication to Augustus’s two grandsons and intended heirs - Gaius and Lucius Caesar – who, prematurely deceased, were accorded the title Princes of Youth (principes juventutis). It is regarded as one of the best-preserved examples of a Roman temple dedicated to the imperial cult in the provinces of Rome and, as a result, is a testament to the period of Rome’s transition from republic to empire.A set of models by Fouquet can also be found in the collection of Sir John Soane's Museum. According to the records held by the Museum, Sir John Soane purchased twenty models by François Fouquet in 1834 from the architect Edward Cresy (1792-1858) who, from 1829-1835, worked in Paris. Soane paid Cresy the substantial sum of £100. A pair of elegant Louis XVI 3-light wall sconces. The bracket shaped shaft is crowned with a fluted vase decorated with a garland of laurel leaves. The bottom the shaft has a finial shaped as a stylized flower bud. The "S" shaped branches are decorated with stylized acanthus leaves. The plain drip trays rest on a classical vase. Circa 1760-1770 A remarkable feature in the design is the use of architectural details borrowed from the classics. As a reaction to the lively Louis XV-styles (Rocaille and Rococo), the Louis XVI style after about 1755 developed in a more sleek style. Although this movement was called “Le goût Grèc”, the style elements were mainly derived from then recent archeological finds in Pompei and Herculaneum in what was the Kingdom of Naples, nowadays a southern part of Italy. The sconces are made in the style of Jean-Charles Delafosse (1734-1791). His style is characterized by combined and intertwined architectural forms with a multitude of detail and a wealthy formal idiom. The rich imagination with which these objects are designed give them a unique aesthetic appeal. The designs of Delafosse were published in 1768 as “Nouvelle Iconologie Historique” and have been supplemented in 1773, 1776 and 1785.
