TETELA MASKThe discovery or rediscovery of this mask brings the number of known examples to eight. The other examples were itemised in Lempertz catalogue of 1 February 2023. The present mask resembles most closely the mask in the Barbier-Mueller collection, Geneva, collected by Berthe Hartert and her husband, Lodève, France, in the 1940s or 50s (Hahner-Herzog, I. and Kecskési, M., "African Masks from the Barbier-Mueller Collection", Geneva, Munich, 1998, p.91). Both masks have a whitened face, carved teeth, two carved scarification marks below each eye and the inclusion of red and blue pigments to highlight certain features.31 cm. highProvenanceJean-Pierre Jernander, Brussels

A Plea For the Free Possession, and a Renovation of the Art of Physick, first edition, initial licence leaf, old ink stamp on title, occasional foxing, contemporary calf, rebacked, a little rubbed, [Wing N397; Garrison-Morton 2529], 8vo, Printed for Richard Lownds, 1665.*** The author (1620-78, alternative spelling Marchamont Nedham) was a journalist and pamphleteer during the English Civil War. This work is an attack on the outmoded methods of the College of Physicians and includes an early account, perhaps the first by an English writer, of the germ theory, based on Athanasius Kircher's experiment (see chapter V).Provenance: James Master (ink name on licence leaf); College of Physicians (ink stamp to title).

A Rich Closet of Physical Secrets, 2 parts in 1, title within typographic border, upper edge slightly chipped (just touching border) and repaired to verso, foxed and browned, part 2 Mmm2 torn, affecting text but not legibility, upper hinge broken with front endpapers and title detached, modern burgundy morocco, gilt, slightly rubbed, [Wing M7; see Wellcome IV, p.1], 4to, Printed by Gartrude Dawson, and are to be sold by William Nealand, 1652.*** Sometimes attributed to Dr (presumably Edward) Edwards. America.- Hennepin (Louis) A New Discovery of a Vast Country in America...Between New France and New Mexico, 3 parts in 1 (second part bound after third part), first English edition, engraved frontispiece and 5 folding plates only (of 6, lacking "The Taking of Quebec by the English"), one folding engraved map only (of 2), frontispiece and title with minor marginal repair, plate of Niagara hand-coloured, map with repaired tear causing very slight loss, route hand-coloured and mileage scale browned, the occasional early ink inscription, including to verso of some plates, R6 & 2G3 tiny rust-hole within text, scattered foxing and soiling throughout, heavy browning at beginning and end, hinges repaired, 19th century calf, spine gilt but with small loss to foot, wear to extremities, joints cracked, [Wing H1450], 8vo, for M. Bentley &tc, 1698. *** The second issue of the English translation, known as the "Tonson" issue (with the first line of the imprint ending in "Tonson"), issued immediately after the first with plates and typography improved. An early account by a French missionary of his travels in the North American interior exploring the basin of the Mississippi River, and including the first printed description and engraving of Niagara Falls. In this copy the second part ("An Account of Several New Discoveries...") is bound after the third ("A Continuation..."). Provenance: "Henry H. Shufeldt Chicago 1881" (pencil inscription to front free endpaper; bookplate); indecipherable 19th century ink ownership inscription (front free endpaper); tipped-in catalogue entry captioned "Quaritch Catalog August 1896" in pencil (front free endpaper).
Boston Election-Day sermon.- Hubbard (William) The Happiness of a People In the Wisdome of their Rulers Directing and in the Obedience of their Brethren Attending unto what Israel ought to do, first edition, title laid down, text leaves cropped with loss of headline and pagination throughout and often affecting first line of text, some water-staining and soiling, later half morocco, joints rubbed, upper cover detached, preserved in modern cloth drop-back box, [Evans 214], 4to, Boston, Printed by John Foster, 1676. *** Rare early Boston imprint from only the second year of printing there. A sermon preached on the occasion of election day, May 3rd 1676 before Governor Leveret, the Council and the magistrates of Massachusetts-Bay. Hubbard (1621-1704), a New England clergyman and historian, proclaims that "You are now called to the exercise of your civill Liberty (wherein much of your other libertys are bound up)," and he urges "the regular, conscientious proceeding in this business of Election," by which the people "have the liberty to choose their own rulers". Provenance: Henry M. Brooks of Salem, Mass. (bookplate).

A BLACK SLATE AND MOSAIC TOPPED CHESTNUT THREE TIER CENTRE TABLE THE TABLE 19TH OR EARLY 20TH CENTURY The polychrome mosaic top inlaid with tesserae with central floriform with a guilloche border, the chestnut base with reeded columnar supports joined by twin shelves 72cm high, 68cm diameter overall Provenance: The base with a 19th century label inscribed in ink; 'Captain Knight/c/o C J Sanford Esq/ Nynehead Court/ Nr. Wellington/Somerset' This inscription almost certainly refers to Edward Lewis Knight of Hornacott Manor, Cornwall (1817- 1882) and a Captain in the 1st West India Regiment, the husband of Henrietta Sanford (1834-1876). Nyneham Court had been the seat of the Sanford family since the 11th century until they sold in the 1940s. The Knight family of Lea Castle, Worcestershire were then significant ironmasters s well as influential agriculturalists at their Exmoor estates in Somerset. Condition Report: The underside of the slate top with a paper label inscribed indistinctly in ink ' ... slab for delivery with M... Slab made at Barberie's with ... aniens ... ai... forms ... A PAIR OF JASPERWARE AND CUT GLASS TABLE LUSTRES IN THE MANNER OF MATTHEW BOULTON AND JOSIAH WEDGWOOD LATE 18TH CENTURY AND LATER Each with central tall finial within two scrolling candle branches, with chains suspended throughout, and to the front from swan head supports approximately 64cm high, 38cm wide across the armsFor other examples traditionally ascribed to Parker & Perry please see M. Mortimer, The English Glass Chandelier, Woodbridge, Suffolk, 2000, p.107, pl. 54. See also the Boulton and Fothergill Pattern Book 2, p. 205 for the base design. Condition Report: Please note these are two light candelabra. The rear two branches have finial spire mounts. All with wear from domestic use, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning and inherent fragile nature with replacement glass elements throughout Both lacking one red glass eye to swan head and one set of drops to rear pans. Wiring for drops and drops with replacements. Brass nozzles all later Some repairs to branch attachment points to mounts to centre, most notably to swan branches. One with edge of back sconce missing The other with repairs to neck and beak of swan Edge wear and small chipping throughout as per age and fragile nature- most visible to edges of mount points. White sprigged relief to bases with firing cracks. The blue Jasper is probably Staffordshire and not Wedgwood and the shade of blue would indicate a date of manufacture in the 19th rather than 18th century. The firing cracks to the sprigging would also indicate, probably not Wedgwood. Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report.
