(1320132) (11)Jacob Adriaensz Backer,1608 Harlingen – 1651 Amsterdam, attributedTHE TRIBUTE MONEYOil on canvas.141 x 159 cm.The painting's subject illustrates the well-known passage from the Bible according to Matthew (22:21). During the time of the tax collection by the Romans, which was financially hard for the people, representatives of the Jewish authorities came to Jesus and showed him a coin and asked him whether the tax money had to be paid to Rome. Jesus replied, pointing to the image of Caesar on the coin: “So give back to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's”.A few versions of Backer's painting are known and are listed in the catalogue raisonné (see literature). One of these versions is held at the National Museum in Stockholm (inv. no. 382), another in a private collection, and a copy with unknown whereabouts (this one?). Backer and his family arrived in Amsterdam when he was a child, aged ca. 20 he went to study and work with Jacobsz Lampert (1598-1636) in Leeuwarden. He adopted the genres of history and religious paintings from his teacher.Literature:Regarding his biography and works: Peter van den Brink, Jaap van der Veen, Heinrich Becker, Jacob Backer (1608/09 - 1651), on occasion of the exhibition “Der Große Virtuose. THE D.B. 16 BORE PERCUSSION SPORTING GUN OF ARTHUR WELLESLEY, 1ST DUKE OF WELLINGTON KG, GCB, GCH, PC, FRS (1769-1852) BY JOSEPH LANG, LONDON, CIRCA 1840with sighted barrels, platinum plugs, engraved tang, signed scroll-engraved locks (defective), figured walnut half-stock, chequered fore-end and grip, engraved iron mounts including trigger-guard with lever safety behind, and silver escutcheon engraved with the owner~s crest beneath a Ducal coronet (rubbed) and brass-tipped ramrod (worn throughout)73.2 cm; 28 7/8 in barrelsThe Duke of Wellington~s success on the battlefield was apparently not matched by his ability as a sportsman. Lady Frances Shelley recalled a shooting party at Maresfield Park, Sussex in October 1819 where ~…..the Duke shot far better than he had done in the morning. Bad was the best, however; for he had contrived to empty two powder horns and a half, with very little to show for it. If truth be told, the hero of Waterloo was a very wild shot. After wounding a retriever early in the day, and, later on, peppering the keeper~s gaiters, he inadvertently sprinkled the bare arms of an old woman who chanced to be washing clothes at her cottage window! I was attracted by her screams, and the fearful ejaculations caused by pain and fear. I took in the situation at a glance, and went to the cottage door. ~I~m wounded, Milady!~ she cried. ~My good woman!~ said I, ~this ought to be the proudest moment of your life. You have had the distinction of being shot by the great Duke of Wellington!~ ~Oh! La!~ exclaimed the old woman, as she glanced towards the Duke with eyes full of tears, not knowing whether to be proud or angry. Then suddenly her face was wreathed in smiles, as the contrite Duke slipped a golden coin into her trembling hand! This incident was apparently not an isolated one, four years later in January 1823 at Wherstead Park in Suffolk, The Morning Post recorded ~…..the Duke of Wellington was so intent on his game, that he lost sight of the party, and in firing his double-barrelled gun, his Grace unfortunately lodged a part of the contents in the face of his Noble Host; seven swan shot entered the cheeks, and one the nose. His Grace, hearing an exclamation of ~I am shot,~ threw down his piece and hurried to the spot, where he found his friend leaning against a tree, the face streaming with blood. One of the party galloped off to Ipswich for medical aid, whilst the others carried the wounded Nobleman to the lodge. A surgeon in less than an hour attended, extracted the shot, and pronounced the Noble patient to be not in any danger…..~ Edgcumbe 1913, pp. 73-74 and Selin 2019.All proceeds to be donated to the British Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal

AN INTRICATELY CARVED ‘DRAGON, QILIN AND BAT - RỒNG, KỲ LÂN AND CON DƠI’ WOODEN INCENSE BURNER STAND OR ALTAR TABLE VIETNAM, LATE NGUYEN DYNASTY, CIRCA 1880-1900 Of square shape, resting on four tubular legs. The apron is openworked on each side with open-worked confronted qilin and centered by a bat together with a coin. The legs are unusually and very finely carved on two layers with coiled dragons. H: 85 cm - Side (the top): 56,5 cm MỘT BÀN THỜ HOẶC ĐẾ LƯ HƯƠNG BẰNG GỖ CHẠM KHẮC TINH XẢO HỌA TIẾT “DRAGON, QILIN AND BAT - RỒNG, KỲ LÂN VÀ CON DƠI” VIỆT NAM, CUỐI TRIỀU NHÀ NGUYỄN, VÀO KHOẢNG 1880-1900 Note: The iconography of this wooden incense burner stand is rich. Amongst the numerous elements, one can point out the combination of a bat (fu 蝠) with a coin (zai 在). Such a design is referred to as an eye coin (yanqian, 眼钱) and creates a visual pun since saying there is a ‘bat on the coin’ (fu zai yan qian) sounds exactly like saying ‘happiness is before your eyes’ (fu zai yan qian 福在眼前). NOTE: CONDITION REPORTS AND MEASUREMENTS It is up to the bidder to satisfy themselves prior to buying as to the condition of a lot. In relation to Condition Reports, whilst we make certain observations on the lot, which are intended to be as helpful as possible, references in the condition report to damage or restoration are for guidance. The absence of such a reference does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of any others. The condition report is an expression of opinion only and must not be treated as a statement of fact. Measurements and weight are approximate and the potential bidder may re-ask it to be checked when asking for a condition report.
