ABBASID: al-Saffah, 749-754, AR dirham, al-Kufa, AH132, A-211, bold strike, choice Extremely Fine. The al-Kufa 132 dirham is the only reasonably available Islamic coin dated AH132. It is very infrequently available in this quality. Starting Price: $100 View image on stevealbum.com View 2nd image on stevealbum.com
"TAIFAS ALMORAVIDES: Anonymous, 1146-1155, AV dinar (3.59g), NM, AH[5]44, A-405, VyE-2001/02, Kassis-138, with al-amr kulluhu lillah / la quwwa illa billah below the kalima on obverse, lightly creased, Extremely Fine, RRR. This somewhat coarsely engraved type was probably issued somewhere in southeastern Spain by local contenders opposed to the rising Kings of Murcia and the Almohades arriving from North Africa. There are numerous spelling errors through this coin, especially in the Qur`anic verse in the obverse margin. The overall calligraphic style resembles some of the dinars minted in the early to mid 540s in and around the Spanish city of Jaén. This date was unknown to Vives y Escudero, and noted by Kassis as a single known specimen in the British Museum, acquired in 1991, which I have not examined (there are no illustrations in the article by Kassis, published in II Jarique in 1988." AYYUBID: al-Nasir Yusuf I (Saladin), 1169-1193, AV dinar (4.17g), Dimashq, AH583, A-785.3, B-79, Extremely Fine, RR. Since the year AH583 corresponds with his conquest of Jerusalem, this type, the only Ayyubid gold coin struck at Dimashq, is logically regarded as a commemorative of Saladin`s conquest. The piece is die-identical on the obverse with the specimen in the Ashmolean Museum that was acquired as a gift from C.J. Chester in 1891 (Balog-79, SICA-881). TRIPOLI: Mahmud II, 1808-1839, BI 20 para (6.96g), Tarabulus Gharb, AH1223 year 20, KM-166, USK-119.11, some corrosion near the rim on both sides, nice strike, nice About Very Fine, R, ex. Ken Bovenkamp collection. By weight and size, it is possible that this was a coin of 30 para rather then 20 para. Starting Price: $110 View image on stevealbum.com View 2nd image on stevealbum.com
TRIPOLI: Mahmud II, 1808-1839, BI 40 para (10.00g), Tarabulus Gharb, AH1223 year 24, KM-215? USK-117.14, without outer margins as on USK-117.17, which represents KM-215, lovely bold strike, with two 8-spoke wheels in the reverse field, bold Very Fine, RR, ex. Ken Bovenkamp collection. The "scratches" in the obverse field are weight adjustment marks, not damage to the coin. Starting Price: $680 View image on stevealbum.com View 2nd image on stevealbum.com
QARAKHANID: LOT of 67 copper dirhams, late Qarakhanid (ca. 1170-1210) and Khwarizmshah (probably all of `Ala al-Din Muhammad, 1200-1220), unidentified, mostly vg or fine, most with some weakness, lot of 67 coins. An interesting and inexpensive study group, of which most of the coin can be identified to ruler. Starting Price: $230 View image on stevealbum.com View 2nd image on stevealbum.com
ILKHAN: Abu Sa`id, 1316-1335, AE fals (3.30g), Jurjan, AH7(29), A-2220, Diler-—, ruler`s name & mint on obverse, kalima, date and the tower known as Gunbad-e Qabus on reverse (aka Gunbad Kavoos), Fine, RRR. This is the only Islamic coin type with an architectural representation before the late 19th century. There is an example with clear date at Tübingen (GJ8 A1). The tower, about 180 feet tall, was completed in 1006 AD and was the tomb of the Ziyarid ruler Shams al-Din Qabus b. Wushmagir, who died 6 years later, in 1012. It still stands today, the tallest pure-brick tower surviving in the world, and remains a popular tourist site in Iran. The city of Jurjan (Gorgan in Persian) is now known as Gunbad-e Qabus. "YUAN: Da Chao, ca. 1206-1227, AR cash (2.56g), H-19.1, FD-1696, da chao means "Great Dynasty," the name the Mongols used for themselves, nice example, Very Good to Fine, RR. According to Hartill, "This coin is alleged to have been cast by the legendary Chengis Khan at his capital at Karakorum. It is usually found in silver." This would place the date about 50-60 years prior to the formal foundation of the Yuan dynasty in 1280, when Khubilai Khan was installed as Emperor of China at Beijing. An alternative attribution assigns this type to the period of Kublai Khan (1260-1294), who first claimed the title of Khaqan in 1260, finalizing his power after the defeat of his rival, Ariq Böke, in 1264. The coin would presumably have been produced either before 1280 or before the introduction of his zhi yuan tong bao cash coins in about 1285. It is currently estimated that approximately 200-250 specimens are known to exist." Starting Price: $950 View image on stevealbum.com View 2nd image on stevealbum.com

"BENGAL PRESIDENCY: AV mohur (12.22g), "Murshidabad", AH1202 year 19 (frozen), KM-113, Prid-83 type, oblique milling sloping towards the left, type struck 1825-1830, Very Fine to Extremely Fine. This piece is a contemporary unofficial issue, die-identical to the illustrated example of Prid-401, and would have been produced either unofficially at one of the Presidency mints or at a privately operated mint, for the following reasons. On the obverse, the H of muhammad is shaped differently from the regular specimens, the H at the end of shah and padishah are plain round circles, and the first A and D of padishah touch one another. On the reverse, the 5-petal flower touches one of the pellets in the 5-pellet rosette to the lower left. The "scratch" on the reverse is not a coin scratch but a die-break, which could occur on both official and unofficial issues."
