A set of four late Victorian novelty salts, with marks for Birmingham 1896, maker Saunders & Shepherd Ltd, modelled as miniature cradles decorated with foliate scrolls and shield shaped plaques; with matched spoons, London 1896, same maker, with crown cast terminals and coin bowls (8). Length of salts 5.8cm, 3.5oz total. Provenance: The Property of Dame Jean Maxwell-Scott DCVO

A James VI (of Scotland) ten shilling piece, struck on a full but slightly irregular flan, with an excellent portrait, overall GVF or better in places, together with a James VI (of Scotland) 1602 half thistle merk, struck on a regular flan with full clear legends, obverse VF reverse fair - legends good but thistle worn (2). Burns Coinage of Scotland only notes two examples of the first coin of that date (vol II page 379)

ANCIENT COINS, Roman, Julius Caesar, Denarius 3.70g, Greece, 48 BC, diademed female head right, wearing oak-wreath, LII behind, rev Gallic trophy, axe on right, CAE-SAR below (Cr 452/2; RCV 1400). Slight corrosion at edge between 5 and 8 o’clock, toned, good very fine. The numeral on the obverse of this coin refers to Caesar’s age in 48 BC

COIN SCALES, A Napoleonic Period set of French coin scales contained in a shaped rectangular fruitwood () box, hinged lid with closing hooks, the steel balance complete with brass pans, the case with recess for four cup weights and lidded recess for grain weights, the inner lid with printed “Table de monnaies d’or et d’argent qui ont cours dans les différens Etats de l’Europe, avec la designation de leur poids …”, the list includes “Ecu de 6 liv de France” and “Pièce de 5 fr. De France”, the case 170mm x 50mm x 19mm. In excellent order. The silver 6-Livres was struck between 1793-1794, year II, whilst the 5-Francs was introduced in year IV, 1795. The chart also includes the regal “Louis”, suggesting the set could date as early as the Directory (1795-1799).
COIN SCALES, Two late Georgian balances, both probably for apothecary use; brass balance with pendulum finial and original brass pans, in mahogany box, lacking all weights, 173mm x 88mm x 35mm, in excellent order; steel balance with swan-neck finials, complete with brass pans, with 13 weights, in oak box, 176mm x 85mm x 32mm, in good order.
