Late 19th Century walnut cased floor standing Polyphon disc playing ‘Penny In The Slot’ musical box, twin comb movement with side handle, upper section fitted arch shaped panel door flanked by split pillars, carved script ‘Polyphon’ to cornice, lower section missing the fall front, 195cm high including later pediment, together with seventeen 19¼” discs Condition Report: Comb has one tip missing. Coin chute is missing. Movement is very dirty but does turn when wound and released. Both pillars have chips to the top. Top pediment is a replacement and the base is probably an addition. A silver presentation coin dish inscribed `Presented by The Daily Telegraph to M J Field in recognition of his World Gliding Altitude Record (SI, 850ft) 29th March 1977. The 5 3/8" diameter dish set with a 1965 Churchill coin to the centre, London 1976. In original box. Provenance: Mike Field, who at the time was a 31 year old technical officer with British Airways set, what was then claimed to be, a new world gliding altitude record on March 29, 1977 in Scotland: this plane Skylark 4 was winch launched from the Cairngorm Gliding Club`s airfield at Feshie and beat the previous American set record by approximately 5000 feet. Field had previously held the British National record of 42,815ft set in 1972 in a flight from Wycombe Air Park. By July 1977, Mr Field`s claim of a new altitude world record had been "turned down" by the British Gliding Association and his British National and UK height gain and absolute altitude records rescinded, as fraudulent claims. The present lot was awarded by The Daily Telegraph who had sponsored Mike Field in his attempt for the world gliding altitude record. (Ref Private Flight April 9th page 892 and 23 July page 259)
