A good quality WW1 period, patriotic embroidered stable belt. Hand made by Arthur Middleton Varah of the Essex Regiment, or more simply known as Arthur Varah. The belt was made by Arthur while convalescing in hospital at Ypres in 1917, as evidenced by his initials ‘AV’ on the item. The piece is embroidered in a tapestry style, using the flag designs of the allied nations of the era. Leather retaining strap and buckles to the ends, plus a small coin style purse affixed to the linen backing of the belt. Notes: Arthur Middleton Varah was born in 1892 in Ecclesall Bierlow, Yorkshire. By 1911 he was the under manager at the well known silver manufacturer, Walker & Hall. He attested for service in December 1915, using the service number 41995, and his service record seems to confirm that he was sick at the time the belt was made. His medical records suggest he suffered with nephritis. Arthur passed away in January 1958. Approximately 77cm length (not including the straps), width 5.5cm. Condition: generally very good. Clean condition, with no untoward holes or tears. Leather supple to the buckles and straps, small element of the press stud fastening missing to the purse attachment, but this doesn’t detract.
