Of Australian Transportation Interest.:, recently come to light from an old coin collection. A copper Transportation token for William Wilcox and Jane Wilcox, named as per title over dove, sun, moon and initials 'WW' above an image of a standing rigged ship, obverse, crown flanked by initials 'WW' over verse 'Remember O How Happy I Shall Be When I Get My Liberty', with the word 'Love' inscribed over two doves, 35mm diameter, 2.8mm thick. *Notes- Known as either 'Transportation Tokens', 'Convict Tokens' or 'Leaden Hearts' these small personal and emotional tokens were given by convicts transported to Australia as a memento to family or loved ones left behind. They were made by both amateur and professional engravers by smoothing over a coin and stippling the decoration. The National Museum of Australia holds the world's largest collection of convict tokens.* Note William Wilcox was given a life sentence of Transportation at Stafford Assizes and was transported along with 256 other convicts aboard the Triton which set sail from England on 4th August 1842, arriving at Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) 19th December 1842.
