Islamic Coins, Fatimid, al-Mustansir, dinar, Zabid 447h, wt. 2.04gms. (Nicol 1738a; A. 1075.1), very fine, very rare It is likely that this coin was struck by the Sulayhids of the Yemen in the name of the Fatimid caliph, who was the spiritual leader of the Shi’a Muslims in Egypt and the Yemen at this time. Nicol, in his book on the Fatimid coinage, records that coins of this type from Zabid in 445h. are rare, and that only one of Zabid 447h is known. Later in this year the Zabid mint adopted the design of the contemporary dinar coinage issued by al-Mustansir in the lands he ruled.
Islamic Coins, Buwayhid, ‘Adud al-dawla (in Fars 338-372h), dirham, Huzu 353h, wt. 2.51gms (Treadwell - ; unrecorded date), fine, very rare Huzu was initially a Julandid, and later a Buwayhid mint located in the port town of Huzu on the Gulf coast of Fars. This is the latest and previously unrecorded date for a coin from this mint which lost its importance to its rival port town Siraf.
Islamic Coins, Ilkhan, Uljaytu (703-716h), dinar, Khanus 716h, wt. 7.14gms (Diler Ilkhans UL-370; A. 2186), good very fine, very rare Khanus is a rarely encountered mint name for the eastern Anatolian town of today's Kinis between Erzurum and Lake Van. It is only recorded in silver bearing the name of Uljaytu, and this dinar is a previously unknown gold coin from the mint.
Islamic Coins, Safawid, Tahmasb II b. Husayn (1135-1145h), silver 20 shahi, Isfahan 1142h, 24.86gms (A. A2689), good very fine, extremely rare This splendid coin is usually found with traces of mounting and evidence of long use as a highly-prized article of jewellery. This piece, however, is in truly exceptional condition which suggests that it may have been retained in the treasury for accounting purposes.
