Byzantine Gold Cross with Garnet, 5th-6th century AD A gold equal armed cross, each arm square section in shape, expanding slightly to the ends with granule bead collar to the edge of the domed ends, each with a point of granule beads. Berry Collection, Indiana, 1995, pp. 283-284The Christian symbolism of this cross signify the passage from the figurative world of Greek and Roman times to the Byzantine era, in which few effigies remain, replaced for the most part by abstract designs.
