Militärstrategien. 18 Kupfertafeln mit Heeresformationen, Belagerungsszenen, Kriegsschiffen und Kriegsmaschinen zur Eroberung. 24,5 x 17 cm. Paris, Gandouin, o. J. (vgl. Brunet IV, 791. Jähns 1461 und 1498ff. Schweiger I, 273. The knotte(n) box belongs to an engagement ritual. In the sixteenth century it was customary in the Northern Netherlands for a boy to offer his girl a coin when he proposed to her. The moment she took this wedding badge, she could consider herself engaged. If several coins were offered, they were presented in a cloth with a special knot: the so-called knotte (or knotte cloth). This knotte ('knot' has the same meaning in Frisian as in English) was knotted 'loosely'. When the girl tied the knot, her response was positive and they were engaged. As prosperity increased, the cloth was replaced by a silver box, the so-called knotte box. The box and its contents remained the property of the woman and were also considered a nest egg. Most knotte boxes date from the seventeenth or early eighteenth century and were made in Friesland or North Holland. In a number of cases, a special gold wedding medal was even made that was offered via the box. After an older example, with molded decorations.
