Lot 184

Anglo-Saxon Harthacnut - Lydford / Aelfwine - Fleur de Lis Penny1040 AD, BMC Type VIII. Obv: profile bust and sceptre with +ARDECNVT RE legend. Rev: voided long cross and fleurs dividing +AELP NEON LYDC ORDM legend for the moneyer Aelfwine at Lydford mint. S. -; N. 810; see EMC. 0.86 grams. It has been suggested that this type, no longer listed in Spink for Harthacnut, is a Danish/Scandinavian origin copy of the almost contemporary Harold I Fleur-de-Lis type (S. 1164; N. 803; BMC Type V); the blundered legend forms seen on this coin could be indicative of this although Lydford is a well attested mint for Aelfwine in the Arm and Sceptre type (S. 1168; N. 811; BMC Type VIII).Good very fine, slight flatness to reverse legend. Very rare.Starting Price: £2000

Lot 186

Anglo-Saxon Edward Confessor - Chester / Leofwine - Expanding Cross Penny1050-1051 AD, light coinage. Obv: profile bust with sceptre and +EDPARD REX legend. Rev: expanding voided cross with annulet at centre and +LEOFPINEONLEGA legend with NL ligated for the moneyer Leofwine at Chester mint. S. 1176; N. 820. 1.05 grams. The mint abbreviation reads LEGA or LECA which, although potentially good readings for the mint at Leicester, there are very similar readings seen at Chester. The moneyer Leofwine is well represented on the Chester types but is not known at Leicester. The balance of probability suggests therefore that this is a Chester mint coin.Very fine, slightly double-struck, reverse a little better. Rare (only one other example in EMC, from different dies).Starting Price: £150

Lot 198

Found Broadway, Worcestershire, UK; recorded with Early Medieval Corpus. The presence of a large, slightly oval pellet below the bust and before the legend on the obverse and another within the moneyer name to the reverse is a previously unknown variant. These pellets are carefully placed utilising a different punch from those used elsewhere in the design but the reason for their insertion is unknown.Near very fine, good bust, slightly small flan. Very rare (only five others recorded in EMC) but the additional large pellets unique.Starting Price: £400
