A very large 'Coin' rummer of maritime interest, raised on a hollow ball stem, enclosing a three penny piece dated 1831, supporting a slice cut bowl engraved with the Schooner Ranger of Aberdeen, opposite a wreathed inscription; "J & B Christie the Schooner Ranger lost off Aberdeen Septr 1st 1833" (9.5ins 24 cms) (see illustration)
A pen and ink drawing by: J*** L*** 4 1/2in. x 5 1/2in. (11 x 14cm) A late 18th Century sepia pen and ink drawing inscribed; "Drawing of an Old Picture on Wood, over a Chimney Piece in the Black Lion Durham - Formerly Sr John Duck's House from the original Septr 1790. J.L." Signed with initials and inscribed on both sides of the paper, in double-sided frame. NB Sir John Duck was Durham's riches man. Born in obscurity, he rose to fame and fortune after a raven dropped a gold coin at his feet. In 1680 he became the Mayor of Durham and ultimately progressed to the rank of a baronet when he became Sir John Duck of Haswell on the Hill. Duck's former home was demolished in 1963.
ZOLA EMILE: (1840-1902) French Writer. Fine A.Q.S., Emile Zola, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., 27th September 1893. In bold, dark fountain pen ink Zola has penned a two line quotation in French, 'Une oeuvre d'art est un coin de la nature vue a travers un temperament' Attractively penned and signed. Professionally matted in greys and blue alongside an antique engraving of Zola. Framed and glazed in a dark wooden frame to an overall size of 22 x 14. VG
TWO 19TH CENTURY SICILLIAN MAIOLICA VASES, one painted with a medallion portrait of Arethusa from a Syracusan coin, c 400 BC against a bright blue ground, boldly painted with a grotesque mask, shells, flowers, leaves and scrolls in yellow and green, 32cms high; the other painted with a medallion portrait of Arethusa from a Syracusan coin, 400 BC against a bright blue ground, boldly painted with flowers, leaves and scrolls in yellow and green, 32cms high. Note: The above lot was, by repute, purchased from the sale of contents of Temple Newsam House, West Yorkshire in 1922, and formed part of lot 822, the description of which reads ‘Two pairs of Italian coloured majolica spherical jars with medallion portraits.’ The other two jars still form part of the collection at Temple Newsam
