IONIA, Achaemenid Period. Uncertain satrap. Circa 350-333 BC. AR Tetradrachm (22mm, 14.94 g). Persian king, wearing kidaris and kandys, in kneeling-running stance right, holding spear in right hand, bow in left / Incuse rectangle, containing pattern possibly depicting relief map of the hinterland of Ephesos. Johnston, Earliest 12 = BMC Ionia p. 324, 3 (same obv. die); Meadows, Administration 328 var. (legend on obv.); Mildenberg, Münzwesen, Group 6.2; Traité II 77–8 (Memnon of Rhodes); Jameson 1787; Pozzi 3138; Sunrise 70 (this coin). EF, toned, light cleaning marks on obverse. From the Sunrise Collection. Ex Gorny & Mosch 125 (13 October 2003), lot 260.Johnston has interpreted this remarkable reverse design as a relief map of the hinterland of Ephesos, which would make it the earliest Greek map and first physical relief map known. On the right (north) are the mountains Tmolos and Messogis between the river valleys of the Caÿster and Maeander, to the left of which are three mountain ridges (Madranbaba Dagi, Karincali Dagi, and Akaba Tepesi). Johnston follows Six in suggesting that the coins were probably struck under the Persian general Memnon at Ephesos, circa 336-334 BC, in order to pay his army after he had captured the city, but before his defeat by Alexander at the Battle of Granicus in 334. However, Johnston’s theory has been the subject of some doubt, most recently by Leo Mildenberg.

These diverse origins notwithstanding, there are common ideas enshrined in them that certainly were influential in the development of this type. The crosses around the figures serve the same apotropaic function as on the similar, single-figure type (see lot 1363, above), but the addition of a second figure with similar features implies concerted action among equals (Gannon, pp. 101-103). Backwards-looking animals such as that on the reverse of this coin are among the most enduring images in ancient Europe. In pre-Christian times, these creatures typically appeared as custodians of treasure. It is possible that they were assimilated in the Christian period as guardians of one’s soul (Gannon, pp. 149-150).

From the Joseph R Lasser Collection for the benefit of The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Purchased from Davissons, April 2010. Ex Spink (25 March 2010), lot 11. Found in north Yorkshire, 2009.During the eighth century AD, Mercia, under its king, Offa (757-796), was the largest and most powerful Anglo-Saxon kingdom in England. As such, this kingdom maintained diplomatic and cross-cultural, and economic contacts with the Carolingian Empire on the Continent (see J. Nelson, “Carolingian Contacts,” in M.P. Brown and C.A. Farr, Mercia [London & New York, 2005]). The coinage reform begun by Pepin I and implemented by his son and successor, Charlemagne (see lot 1371) produced deniers struck on broad flans of good metal. This new coinage became the denominational standard throughout the Carolingian Empire, replacing the earlier, smaller Merovingian silver issues and the sceats found in northern Europe and across the English Channel. In Anglo-Saxon England, these earlier coin types were replaced with a new denomination, the penny. Based on the Carolingian denier, these coins first appear in two very rare issues of the Kentish kings, Heaberht and Ecgberht. It was Offa, however, who introduced the penny to a much wider audience in England, with both heavy and light issues in various portrait and non-portrait types. So successful was this new denomination that it continued to be the sole English silver denomination until the introduction of the groat, halfpenny, and farthing under Edward I in 1279.

Kern Collection. The value of silver continually rose during the early years of James` reign, and soon the metal content of the Scottish coinage was considerably higher than face value. Consequently, silver coinage began to disappear from circulation, being melted down or sold abroad. In July of 1578, the Privy Council passed an act authorizing the revaluation of the coinage. Silver coins would be bought in by the Mint and released to circulate at a higher value by the addition of a crowned thistle countermark. Under this new valuation, a ryal, for example, worth 30 shillings face, would be bought in at 32s/6d, revalidated and returned to the supplier with a higher value of 36s/9d. However, the Mint collected a 4s/3d "handling fee" per ryal. In other words, the supplier would get back a value of metal exactly equal to what he put in, while the state collected a 12% surcharge. This measure was obviously very unpopular, and, in 1581, a new revalued coinage had to be introduced.

Eventually, in an attempt to avoid inflammatory political or religious messages, the group decided on an agricultural theme, highlighting the natural bounty of Ireland.

From the Michael Joffre Collection. My journey collecting Anglo-Gallic pieces began about 18 years ago, when my close friend and numismatic mentor Bill Whetstone offered me a nice denier of Eleanor of Aquitaine. Of course, the next purchases were the Elias catalogs, both the reference book and auction sale. With these tools in hand, I set off on a wonderful collecting journey. As a lifetime Montreal resident, the history of French and English conflict is always fresh in my mind. Being a full-time coin dealer, and owner of Carsley Whetstone, gave me many avenues to discover new Anglo-Gallic treasures. Some of the pieces did come my way via local purchases here in Canada, others from more traditional sources like auctions, mail order lists, and eBay. Many others, however, were acquired through collecting friendships I developed with people both in Europe and North America. Steve Ford and I began corresponding about 15 years ago...both of us being the “young guys” in the collecting area at the time. His passion and scientific pursuit of information for this series is astounding. I consider him to be the current world expert on the subject, and am privileged to have learned, and acquired some special pieces from him.As you will see from the listings, many of the coins are very rare or nearly unique, and putting together another grouping like this would be a formidable challenge, regardless of budget. Of particular note, there are six coins from Bergerac, an Elias 183, an Elias 217 La Rochelle, which I believe to have discovered the first example, and many rare Edward III pieces, including some not listed in Elias. Much of the collection has been displayed over the years at local coin clubs, including the Montreal Numismatic Society, and the Lakeshore Coin Club, both of which I have been the long serving President. My hope is that in new hands my collection will create the same passion I enjoyed, and it will spur yet more research into the Hundred Years War, and its coinage.– Michael JoffreAll of the following Anglo-Gallic coins are from the Joffre Collection. References to SCBC in this section refer to Standard Catalogue of British Coins, volume 2, Coins of Scotland, Ireland and the Islands including Anglo-Gallic coins (Spink, 2015 [forthcoming]), based on the work of Steve Ford and Paul and Bente R. Reattributions from Edward III to Edward II are also based on the latter work.Classical Numismatic Group, Inc. would like to thank Steve Ford and Dr. Gordon Andreas Singer for their assistance in the cataloging of this collection.

Lot also includes folles of Licinius I (10) and Licinius II (4). Fair-VF with brown patina. LOT SOLD AS IS, NO RETURNS. Six hundred forty-five (645) coins in lot. Sold on behalf of the Royal Ontario Museum. Ex 1903/5 Ihnasyah Hoard. Each individual coin comes in an archival flip and has its own ticket containing museum inventory number and pedigree information.Prior to the opening of the Royal Ontario Museum in 1912, the first Director of Archaeology, Dr. C.T. Currelly, purchased in Egypt a large hoard, or portion of a hoard, of Constantinian bronze coins, which were to form the nucleus of the Museum`s collections. Containing coins datable from the period immediately following the Battle of Chrysopolis in AD 324 all the way to AD 346, the hoard, discovered, in 1903 or shortly before its sale, was purchased in 1905 at Ihnasyah in the Fayyum. Examined by J.G. Milne, the hoard, along with Milne`s analysis, was published in 1914 in the Journal International d`Archeologie Numismatique. Totaling more than 6000 coins, the hoard included some coins from other periods, which made their way into the hoard at the time of the sale, since their patination is different from the rest of the hoard. In 1965, Frederick H. Armstrong published a revisiting of the hoard (Phoenix 19 [1965]), revising and amending the earlier work of Milne, and noting varieties missed in the earlier study prior to the publication of Late Roman Bronze Coinage. For pdfs of Milne’s original publication of the hoard and Armstrong’s supplementary study, as well as a listing of the inventory numbers of the hoard, see http://www.cngcoins/rom
