Aethelstan (924-939), Penny, two line type, small cross, +PI ÆÐELZTΛИ REX, rev. moneyers name in two lines, three crosses between, a trefoil of pellets above and below, JERRAD retrograde, 1.55g, (S.1089, N.668). Deeply toned, very fine and extremely rareNote: The curious obverse reading on this coin raises some interesting questions. Athelstan was a Mercian and was not originally accepted in Wessex, particularly in Winchester where Aelfweard, Aethelstan's half brother, may have been accepted as king though he outlived his father by only sixteen days. One possibility is that PI in the legend, usually denoting Winchester in this period (Winchester Aethelstan King), was an attempt to gain authority and acceptance in Wessex

Nicely struck, excellent fields, very fine or better Note: EMC/SCBI lists multiple coins of this moneyer but none with this reading, the first letter of the moneyer's name clearly beginning with an 'E' on this coin
Charles II (1660-1685) Crown 1664 second laureate and draped bust right rev. crowned cruciform shields interlinked C's in angles eight strings to harp edge XVI reverse out of alignment (S.3355 ESC.362). Some minor pitting the obverse struck from a tidied up rusty die Note: A curious coin on two accounts. The reverse die axis is out of alignment by approximately 45 degrees and the obverse die is either unfinished or has been corroded and improperly tidied up leaving the area behind the head
William III (1694-1702) Sixpence 1697 Exeter mint first laureate and draped bust right E below rev. crowned cruciform shields angles plain small crowns small 7 in date (S.3534 ESC.1283 R2).
