STRINDBERG AUGUST: (1849-1912) Swedish Playwright, Novelist and Painter. Widely considered the "Father" of the modern Swedish literature. Exceptionally rare and extremely important Autograph Manuscript Signed, `A. Strindberg´, five pages, to five separate sheets, 4to, n,p., n.d., entitled `Faraondyrkan´, ("Pharaoh-Devotion"), the manuscript text being the first step in Strindberg´s famous "Strindbergfejden" ("The Strindberg Feud"), in Swedish. The pages are numbered in Strindberg´s hand from `Faraon 2´ to `Faraon 6´, page one is missing. Last page `Faraon 6´ showing a printed paper image affixed, with Strindberg´s annotations alongside and beneath. The image depicting Georg Hindrich Von Görtz. A lengthy and exceptional manuscript in Strindberg´s hand, stating in part `That is how false coin falls. Admirers of the worthless piece of crap, admirers through inherited sympathy, transform common metal to patriotic gold..´, further saying `..the worst regent in Swedish history, one who couldn't speak Swedish and one who actually was a German farm lord. Him whose worthless government caused Sweden to stop being an independent nation, because for a century Sweden was contaminated by England, France and Russia, whose great powers ruled the governmental people. He [King Charles XII] wasn't even a battle leader because in the last battle he placed himself in the artillery at the rearguard and doomed his army to be defeated. A battle leader leads the battle… In his youth he practiced decapitating sheep, calves and horses and at the bridge of the city of Kristianstad he shot a cow just "for the fun of it"… He abandoned his country cowardly, after having depleted it, and finally with a little sense of shame, he picked a responsible person, on whom he could put the blame…´ The five pages bearing an attractive Handgjord Post Lessebo watermark with monogramme. A letter of extremely interesting content. Small overall, minor age wear, with very slightly trimmed edges, otherwise G £2000-3000In 1910, Strindberg started one of the biggest cultural debates Sweden has ever seen, "The Strindberg Feud". It started out as an attack on the prevailing literary powers. What was initially purely a literary debate soon moved into suffrage, national defence and the role of the Swedish Academy. The Strindberg Feud lasted for more than two years and still had not ended with Strindberg's death in 1912. The present manuscript main topic is Strindbergsfejden, a Swedish cultural debate that arose when August Strindberg, in 1910, criticized King Charles XII and his contemporary admirers in the article Faraondyrkan. Therefore, this text could be a draft, or a previous version, of that article. Published in Swedish newspaper Afton-tidningen, 29th April 1910, claiming that the Karolinian King had been "the glory of sickness, the battle of madness". Strindberg had repeatedly attacked the old warrior King, and the article appeared as a semi-routine repetition of known views when published. Charles XII of Sweden (1682-1718) King of Sweden 1697-1718. Georg Hindrich Von Görtz, Baron of Schlitz (1668-1719), Swedish Diplomat and main assistant to King Charles XII.
