Convict love tokens, almost always on copper coins, were produced as keepsakes for family and loved ones, especially when the convict was facing transportation to Australia; they provide a fascinating insight into and connection with those who were convicted and banished from England in the early to mid 19th century. FELTON has been deliberately scored through. Rev: engraved heart over three arrows with thistle left and rose right. In the 18th and 19th centuries love tokens were handmade by suitors who gave them to their sweethearts. Poorer working class young men made their tokens from copper coins. The wealthy young man could use a silver or very rarely a gold coin. It was the custom for a gentleman to either piece and/or bend a coin and give it to his beloved as a token of his love and a sign of his intention to marry her. The coin was not to be spent, but instead, to be carried always by the woman as a demonstration of her fidelity, a constant reminder to her each time she opened her purse. Fine condition.

A mixed group of bronze dragonesque brooches and fragments comprising: DB2 openwork brooch of the 'eye' type; DB8 brooch of Brigantian type with rectangular cells to the body; DB13 brooch with plano-convex section; DB15 brooch of the Brigantes, ridged body type; DB20 brooch with one trumpet finial remaining.For DB15, Chris Rudd List 41, p.5; commented on by Richard Feachem, examined by Dr Anne Ross and later acquired by collector Don Lee; accompanied by a copy of the relevant catalogue pages. 62 grams total, 33-55mm (1 1/4 - 2 1/4"). The Chris Rudd collection, Norfolk, UK; formed since the 1970s; collection numbers DB2, DB8, DB13, DB15 & DB20; found Malton, North Yorkshire; Boroughbridge, Yorkshire; Catterick, North Yorkshire and formerly in the Don Lee collection; and near York, Yorkshire, UK. Chris Rudd has collected ancient coins and antiquities since the 1940s. As an amateur archaeologist he found many himself at Badbury Rings, Dorset, 1952-53. He also dug at Hod Hill with Professor Sir Ian Richmond and at Wroxeter with Dame Kathleen Kenyon and Dr Graham Webster. Today he is best known as a Celtic coin dealer. His catalogues have been described as ‘an important research source’ by Professor Sir Barry Cunliffe and ‘treasure houses of delight’ by Dr Anne Ross. Coins and artefacts associated with Chris Rudd – as a collector, dealer and valuer – can be seen in The British Museum and other museums. This collection was formed since the 1970s.
