St George is on horseback, advancing to right, wearing a helmet and chlamys (cape, or cloak) fastened in front by a fibula, and holding a broken lance. His left hand clutches the rein of the horse's bridle, and he does not wear armour, other than on his lower legs and feet, with his toes bare. The saint's horse appears to be half attacking, half shrinking from the dragon, which lies wounded by George's spear and in the throes of death. The point of the lance is broken off in the dragon's side. In relief in the left part of the ground line, the artist's initials B.P. (for Benedetto Pistrucci). Victoria had only just turned 18 when she became Queen and Empress of the world's leading empire at the time, with dominions scattered around the globe. All eyes were on her to deliver the huge task of leading the empire to future prosperity. The depiction of Victoria as Lady Una, calmly directing the enormous beast by her side, the Lion (representing England), was a clever analogy, using the characters from Edmund Spenser's poem The Faerie Queene (written in 1590). Overstruck Spanish American 8 Real coin issued by the Bank of England with a value of 5 shillings to supplement a deficiency in British silver coins. The coins were struck by the Soho Mint, Birmingham between 1804 and 1811, though all bear the date 1804. They were re-valued at 5 shillings 6 pence in 1811 and were withdrawn in 1817-1818. AUSTRALIA. George V, 1910-36. Gold sovereign, 1923 S. Sydney. A low mintage, rare date from Sydney mint. The world discontinued gold convertibility during WWI and the British Empire did not go back to the Gold Standard until 1925. Hence, many extremely rare dates were created in Australia during this period where sovereigns were produced in very small numbers for local use. The inherent problem with sovereigns (which were legal tender for £1) during this period was that the exchange rate of British Pound Sterling in relation to gold made the coin reduntant and gold output in Australia was mainly in bar form.
