UNITED KINGDOM. Victoria, 1837-1901. Silver medal, 1887. Royal Mint. BHM-3219. Official medal for the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria on 20 June 1887, by L. C. Wyon after Joseph Edgar Boehm and Frederic Leighton. With little experience in the designing for small surfaces, Boehm's 'Jubilee Head' coin design had been heavily criticised and unpopular with the public. The larger format of the medal gave him greater space and was an improvement on the effigy. ENGLAND. Henry VI, 1422-61, 1470-71. Gold quarter-noble, ND (1422-1461). Tower (London) mint. Annulet issue, Obv: HENRIC DI GRA REX ANGL, quartered shield of arms of England and France with lis above all within tressure of eight arches; Trefoil stops. Rev: EXALTABITVR IN GLORIA, ornate cross with lis to angles, lions between, and central lis, all within treasure of eight arches; mullet and annulet stops.Good very fine. The noble was the first English gold coin produced in major quantity, introduced during the second coinage of King Edward III. Before the noble, the gold penny and the florin were minted during the reign of King Henry III and the beginning of Edward III's. While these predecessors saw little circulation, the derivatives of the noble--the half noble and quarter noble here--were produced in quantity and were very popular. Nobles and their derivatives were struck throughout Henry VI's first reign (1422–61), but a shortage of gold resulted in fewer coins being struck. UNITED STATES. Federal republic, 1776-date). Silver 1/2 dollar= 50 cents, 1893. Philadelphia. This coin was produced for the World's Columbian Exposition that took place between the 1st of May to October 30, 1893, in Chicago, Illinois, which celebrated the 400th anniversary of the arrival of Columbus to America.According to Tom DeLorey Coinage, May 2016, p. 9, the Columbian Exposition half-dollar "came about when the organization putting on the World’s Fair requested a grant from the U.S. Treasury of $5 million to help build the fairgrounds so it could open." The Treasury, however, gave "only $2.5 million due to the prevailing hard economic times." DeLorey goes on to say that someone "connected with the Fair Authority got the brilliant idea that if the Treasury would provide the $2.5 million in the form of five million commemorative half dollars," then the Fair would need only "to sell the coins for a dollar each" in order to obtain the extra $2.5 million dollars needed. Because of hard economic times, however, "only a few hundred thousand were sold at the premium, the rest were either released into circulation at face value or melted."Portrait of Christopher Columbus facing right with the denomination below. / The ship Santa Maria sailing to the left above 2 half planispheres that divides the date 1493 with a legend around the rim and the date below. In secure plastic holder, graded PCGS MS64 , certification number 45869978.
