Meschac Gaba (Benin, born 1961)Wheelbarrow banknotes, paper and wood121 x 121cm (47 5/8 x 47 5/8in).Footnotes:ProvenancePrivate collection, Netherlands. For Gaba, the wheelbarrow is an object of symbolic importance. In 2014, the artist exhibited a wall-mounted coin bank in the shape of a stylised barrow entitled Bankivi: Workers' Bank at the Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, USA. The title of the work emphasizes that this is a savings account, not a donations box. It communicates Gaba's belief that individual contribution and collective investment are of greater benefit to the developing world than isolated acts of charity. The present lot has been wrapped in decommissioned Central African franc banknotes; a stark visual reminder that the current institutions need reform. The global economy and economic exchange between Africa and the West has preoccupied Gaba since the late 1990's. Born in Cotonou, Benin, but raised in the Netherlands, the artist has a foot in both camps. His dual identity caused him to question the the relationship between the 'first' and 'third' world, and consider how the existing systems might be restructured. The wheelbarrow 'banks' encourage us to engage with the problem of Africa's struggling economies at a personal level. In choosing to deposit a coin, the visitor is indicating their support for international collaboration.Since completing his studies at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, Meschac Gaba has exhibited at numerous international fairs such as the 50th Venice Biennial in 2003 and Documenta 11 in 2002. Tate Modern in London acquired a major installation in 2013, entitled Museum of Contemporary African Art. He is now a household name across the world. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Fifteen inches or 38cm long; a small beaded coin purse, one side totally beaded with central flowers in pink and blue against a mustard ground, bordered with green, blue and pink glass beads, the verso with a vibrant yellow beaded border designed with various symbol, the central green beaded panel offsetting the initials ''JK'' in shades of pink. Lot 5284

A Trio of 19th Century Miser's or Stocking Purses in shades of green gold and silver, comprising a crochet example that opens at each end by means of pressing the button of each gold metal frame. With a dark green thread background, alternating with lime green stripes and embellished with tiny gold beads in a paisley boteh design. Together with a fine mid-green knitted miser's purse, beaded with gold and silver metal beads, basic silver metal fringe, but fitted with very elaborate gold metal sliders, one formed in a single panels, the other in three, the panels with raised flowers, the different slider perhaps indicating to the user which denomination of coin was at which end as the purse ends are both rounded. Finally, a more usual shape of miser's purse with one straight end and one rounded, the latter finished with a silk tassel. Worked in stripes, using green, cream, ruby and brown threads, the purse is beaded with cut steel. Silver metal sliders, and cut steel bobbles complete the item. All in good clean order.

Thirdly, a silver metal mesh purse, looking similar to a miser's purse but without the central opening, but fitted with a gold metal slider. Each end has a slender metal opening frame, one in gold one in silver. Finally, a delicate black net purse with gold metal frame, classically embossed, embroidered with silver and gold cut steel beads in the same design but different colours back and front. Finished with a shaped gold metal tassel in bell flower form, to each bottom corner (4). First purse, a few of the larger loops holding the chair along the draw section. The second purse bag fabric is drab but appears unworn. The final bag has slight damage to the net just under the centre front of the frame.

Some slight damage at the join of frame to beadwork on the purse with MOP frame, where they tend to wear, and the same on the fourth purse.

Lot 5371

Three Fine and Delicate Late 18th/Early 19th Century Coin Purses, the first with a look of Bebilla, the minute needlework in beige tinged with yellow in two distinct areas. Draw thread top; an unusual purse worked in pale blue and lemon to the top layer and yellow to the inside, side seam, open work to the top layer in the blue areas. Tassel and draw thread; and the third purse, also with draw thread, worked in fine gold and silver metal threads, in design bands, with raised flower heads and a scalloped-edge frill at the lower section, plus simple tassel.. Item 1 bears an old price label of £145. Green silk placed inside for better image visibility.

Lot 5372

Three Good 19th Century Coin Purses with gold metal frames, the first with a heavily embossed frame and tiny gold metal chain, two decorative gold metal bobbles at the bottom. Worked in a mix of silk and metal threads, the purse is designed in bands in coral, black, white, with designs incorporating those colours plus a hint of yellow. Unlined, and very firm. Next, a woven beaded example, the frame distinctive with an entwined serpent at each side, the slender top panel lightly embossed. The glass and gold metal beads are designed as flowers and trees. Lined in teal silk; finally, an early coin purse with a curved gold metal frame, a mythical winged beast to each side panel. One section is inlaid with white mother-of-pearl. The body of the bag, worked in green silks and gold metal thread, resembles spider's webs. Coiled metal thread tassel.. The first purse feels crisp, as new. Purse three is missing the panel of MOP to the second side of the frame. Tassel tarnished. Old price label for 375€. No marks noted for gold.

Lot 5373

A Good 19th Century Coin Purse with substantial gold metal frame, the woven bead design one of a peacock with tail feathers fanned out, the bird meandering through a colourful flower garden, this garden being expanded on the back panel to include a garland of roses. The rounded bottom panel is worked in contrasting colours. Simple gold thread strap, lined in old silk; Together with Three More 19th Century Coin Purses, the first an unstructured bead sack woven with paisley boteh and spring flowers. Next, a plain knitted ruby silk bag, unusual with a divider inside, topped with a floral embossed gold metal frame. Finally, a navy-blue bag with tiny gold beads incorporated into the body and designed as a star to the bottom. Good gold metal frame formed as bunches of grapes, and very decorative tassel (4). Item 1, the frame is crudely attached. The beadwork bag is crisp and firm. Item 2 has one repair mid body and the tassels are worn.

Lot 5374

Three Scarce Coin Purses, from the late 18th century/early 19th century, to include a small crochet purse ''en diable'' in a pale sea green silk thread, gold metal beads incorporated between each circle, the frame comprising two metal rods or bars with decoratively shaped end finials, a short chain with embossed gold metal finger ring attached to each; a coin purse intricately worked in royal blue and silver metal thread, the silver thread used in a spider's web design with a tiny blue bead in the centre, the blue thread worked more openly and the centre raised, this time with a silver metal bead to the centre. Finished with a silver bobble (not original) and a very simple silver metal half-moon frame; Finally, a slightly larger coin purse worked entirely in gold and silver metal thread with coloured silk thread to the wide central band, this area worked with large shaded pink roses and coloured green leaves. The lower section has gold thread designs. The rounded silver metal frame is lightly embossed and finishes at each side with a bird's head, and the bag is fitted with a tassel in silver metal thread resembling an acorn.. The “en Diable” purse is crisp and probably unused. The spiders web purse has rubbing/tarnish to the frame, not serious. The final purse has some wear to the threads under each side frame section by the heads, and a replacement silk lining has been tacked in probably to help against any further rubbing of the threads.

Lot 5375

Three Fine and Unusual Coin Purses, to include an ''en diable'' example, slightly larger than usual, incorporating different techniques, metal beads being used for fringing and are integral in the upper body. The gold metal rods or bars end with particularly ornate finials, each with tiny turquoise stones in each side. A gold chain and embossed finger ring are additional fixtures. Next, a small purse formed with the spider's web design, in gold and silver metal threads, with metal thread tassel and loops attached to the draw thread. Lined in turquoise. Finally, a larger coin purse worked entirely in mainly silver metal thread, the lower section also with bronze, supplemented with silk threads for the pink and yellow rather exotic flowers (one side with the look of orchids) and shaded green leaves. Small metal thread balls to the bottom and to the ends of the draw threads.. The cream floral band in item 1 is slightly foxed but generally the purse feels firm and unused. Item 2, the gold thread to the top might be a later addition as well as the lining. Item 3 is crisp and firm.

Lot 5376

Five Miscellaneous Quality 19th Century Accessory Items, the first featuring a complex design for a miser's purse, three bands containing various motifs in yellow, black, raspberry, the ends and centre panel in raspberry, one end with a silk fringe, and fitted with two sliders in silver metal. Next, an extremely fine miser's purse, with three panels of a geometric pattern, almost like Tumbling Block, and two more open in rows, all incorporating the same colours of silk thread. Fitted with two small bone sliders and silk fringing to each end.; a small embroidered circular panel, possibly the centre for a hat, almost with an Asian feel, formed with dense silver metal meandering foliage, leaves of coloured metal beads, two acorns, tiny gold sequins and an oval red glass stone. Edged and backed with purple crepe; a small coin purse with embossed gold metal frame, push-button opening, the top resembling a flower, below which is attached a small bag in teal and worked with tiny gold beads, the underside in a design matching that of the metal top. Finally, an expanding embossed gold metal frame for a reticule, fitted with a substantial gold chain handle, the expanding section firmly contained within the lid but opening to a useful circumference.. Slight wear to the opening section, item 1 and one tassel absent. Item 2 appears crisp and perhaps unused. The circular panel lacks the odd gold sequin and the metal thread areas are tarnished.
