Lot 1115

Imhoof-Blumer, F. GRIECHISCHE MÜNZEN. NEUE BEITRÄGE UND UNTERSUCHUNGEN. München: Aus den Abhandlungen der k. bayer. Akademie der Wiss., 1890. 4to, contemporary blue half morocco; spine with five raised bands, ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt; page edges red. Fine engraved frontispiece of the author; 274 pages; 14 fine plates of coins. Some wear to binding, though still sound and attractive. Near fine or so. Very scarce; remains significant for dates of the Asia Minor city issues, autonomous money and Greek imperial coins. The 1890 work is an update and translation of the 1883 French edition, and includes five plates not in the earlier edition. Percy Gardner summarized Imhoof-Blumer in the obituary he wrote for him in the Numismatic Chronicle: “Mr. J.P. Six of Amsterdam surpassed him in brilliance of conjecture, and Barclay Head in breadth of view, but neither could rival him in extent and accuracy of knowledge. ... I do not suppose that anyone hereafter will carry the whole of Greek coinage in his head as Imhoof-Blumer did” (quoted in Spring, Ancient Coin Auction Catalogues, pages 138–139). Clain-Stefanelli 1838*. Daehn 107. Grierson 53.

DIE ANTIKEN MÜNZEN MYSIENS… I. ABTEILUNG: ADRAMYTION–KISTHENE. Berlin: Georg Reimer, 1913. 4to, contemporary cloth-backed boards; original card covers mounted. v, (1), 223, (1) pages; 10 fine plates of coins. Binding worn; some marginal chipping. Very good. A lovely and complete set, even including the rare final volume on Mysia. Best described in Clain-Stefanelli’s Numismatics—An Ancient Science (pages 42–43): “Imhoof-Blumer’s name trails like a comet across the field of Greek numismatics.… Inspired by Theodor Mommsen’s idea of creating an extensive work on Greek coins as a companion to the ‘Corpus of Latin Inscriptions,’ the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin assigned to Imhoof-Blumer the direction of Die antiken Münzen Nord-Griechenlands. Such a corpus was intended to supersede all publications on the subject by describing every known coin type of each city or province within a chronological sequence, with full attention given to all available source material. This dream of a corpus of all ancient Greek coins seems to have haunted numismatists since the early 16th century, when Wolfgang Lazius first proposed such a work. But it proved too ambitious even for the late 1800s, and despite competent scholars, this gigantic German work progressed very slowly until it finally came to a halt in the late 1930s.” The rare unnumbered final volume edited by Hans von Fritze is present in this lot. Clain-Stefanelli 1806*, 2305*, 2368*, 2417*, 2418* and 2678. Daehn 3247, 3614, 3620 and 3621.

In part, it is a refutation of the arguments advanced by Oluf Gerhard Tychsen after publication of the initial work. Of these 1781 and 1790 Bayer volumes, Brunet notes: “Ces deux ouvrages sont fort estimés, et l’exécution typographique en est magnifique. Dekesel B167. Lipsius 26. Mayer 59.

Paolo Maria Paciaudi of Turin (1710–81), was a Theatine priest and a well-known authority on numismatics and ecclesiastical archeology. His Philological Observations appears to be quite rare. Correspondence, mainly on antiquarian topics, between Paciaudi and the French writer and noted numismatist, Jean Jacques Barthelemy (1716–95), may be found in the 1877 Correspondance indite du Comte de Caylus by Ch. Superbly engraved allegorical frontispiece; (48), cxxvi, (2), 544, (108); (14), 777, (39) pages; engraved title vignettes; finely engraved dedication vignettes; engraved initials; finely engraved double-page map; numerous coin engravings in the text, many full-page, including 46 plates. Extremities a bit worn; joints a trifle weak. Finely engraved armorial ex libris William Staunton. Fine set. An important early work on Roman coins, featuring the first printing of Banduri’s landmark 128-page Bibliotheca numaria, by far the best numismatic bibliography up to that time. John Akerman considered the main work to be of “great value” and John Pinkerton emphasized its utility to the student of Byzantine numismatics. A fine, complete set, seldom found with both the frontispiece and the map. Babelon page 113: “His vast work on Imperial coins rendered earlier works on the same series useless.” Bassoli pages 33–34: “Anselmo Banduri…occupies a particular place in numismatic bibliography… He is most remembered…for his great work completed in 1718, Numismata Imperatorum a Trajano Decio ad Palaeologos Augustos. Its introduction, Bibliotheca numaria, was the first full critical text encompassing the entire range of numismatic literature up to and including Banduri’s own period. The Numismata Imperatorum gives a biographical background for every historical character and, better still, points out the importance of numismatics in resolving the inevitable problems of chronology which accompany such a survey… Above all else, the work shows a remarkable vitality.” Brückmann 7. Patarol, Laurentius. OPERA OMNIA QUORUM PLERAQUE NUNC PRIMUM IN LUCEM PRODEUNT. TOMUS PRIMUS & TOMUS SECUNDUS. Venetiis: Typis Joannis Baptistæ Pasquali, 1743. Two volumes complete. 4to [25 by 19 cm], contemporary black quarter calf with vellum corners; flat spine decoratively gilt at top and base; two red morocco labels, gilt; marbled paper sides. xxxii, 496; (8), 501, (1) pages; main title printed in red and black, incorporating the printer’s handsome woodcut device; numerous woodcut decorations; 24 of 27 well-engraved plates, mainly depicting ancient Roman coins in the first part; 2 finely engraved natural history plates in the second. Binding extremities quite rubbed. Overall an attractive, very good or better example. Ex Ferdinando Bassoli library, with his bookplate; ex Liber, Turin; ink stamp of V. Bottai on front flyleaf and first title. The first volume features the author’s two major numismatic treatises: Series Augustorum, Augustarum, Cæsarum, et tyrannorum omnium … and Panegyricæ orationes veterum oratorum. Notis, ac numismatibus illustravit… Lipsius records a short, eight-page Lettura concerning a coin of Vespasian as being present in the second part. Brunet describes the volumes as containing “(c)ollections riche in bons mémoires,” and goes on to praise Patarol’s Latin poetry. Graesse notes that the poetry and Panegyrici veteres in this edition “est supérieur.” Both works are handsomely printed in diminutive yet easy-to-read type, adorned with charming woodcuts, one incorporating coins. In the first work, 294 coin obverses are depicted on the 15 Series Augustorum plates (the coin engravings present in earlier editions were interspersed in the text). The text of the Panegyrics is arranged in double columns: the outer columns comprising an Italian translation printed in Roman type; the inner columns featuring Latin text printed in italic type. Three of the twelve coin plates called for (VIII, IX, & X) were never present here. The charming plates in part two depict Cantaride del Giglio (Spanish Fly). Brunet 19039. Cicognara 2962. Title printed in red and black; engraved headpiece; woodcut headpieces and tailpieces. Binding a bit scuffed, but sound; near fine. A significant work. Numismata imperatorum was an outstanding achievement, and was very popular in its day, going through many editions. Significantly, Vaillant cited a source for each coin he included in his enumeration, thus avoiding the trap so commonly encountered at the time of listing apocryphal coins. These citations provide us with information on the holdings of some of the most prominent coin cabinets of the 17th century. This state of the work includes the often-missing Nummorum appendix. Zürich, 8 October 2010. 179, (5) pages; 475 lots; illustrated. 4to [sizes vary somewhat], all volumes bound in similar style, utilizing full brown morocco; deeply paneled front covers, into each of which has been inset a fine reproduction of an ancient Greek coin of a type appropriate to each sale; title lettering impressed in brown; spines with two raised bands, lettered in brown; original pictorial card covers or printed boards generally bound in. Additional printed sheets comprising additions, corrections, comments, reviews and so forth frequently included. Prices realized lists bound in. Generally fine. Specially bound copies of the first seven BCD sales, produced after the sales by BCD himself and distributed to a very small circle of friends. Each catalogue is exquisitely bound in full brown morocco, most notably featuring an inset reproduction of one the coins offered within the catalogue. These striking bindings are a testament both to the importance of BCD’s collecton and his personal bibliophilia. The “extras” bound into most of the catalogues add to the historical importance of these sales and do much to capture the excitement within the numismatic community regarding them. Only ten complete sets of these catalogues exist; similar bound versions of the two Thessaly sales are currently in production and may be available to the purchaser of this lot at their cost.

Contents generally very good or better. An extraordinary opportunity to acquire the personal copies of the first twelve catalogues issued by one of the foremost numismatists of his age. These catalogues derive from the library of Tom Virzi, who had received them directly from Hirsch. From Virzi, they passed to Bob Myers, from whose library Herb Kreindler acquired them several years ago. Jacob Hirsch (1874–1955) began his career by selling material from the estate of his uncle, Heinrich Hirsch, who had been in the coin business prior to his death in 1886. He quickly earned a reputation for his scholarly cataloguing and extraordinary memory, leading to his assuming at a rather young age a prominent place in the numismatic trade in early 20th-century Europe. The famous series of Ars Classica sales, which began to be issued in 1921 under the Naville et Cie. imprimatur, cemented Hirsch’s reputation for fine cataloguing and rigorous scholarship—a reputation he began to acquire with the present catalogues. These catalogues are the material records of Hirsch’s origins and remain important for provenance research as well. All of these early Hirsch sales are scarce, and several are very rare. These particular copies are of unparalleled importance and are a highlight of the Kreindler library. Lot description somewhat truncated for online presentation: see printed catalogue for full description. "

Spring 595: “As far as we know these are the first photographic plates to appear in an ancient coin catalogue.” Spring’s comment seems to ignore as many as five earlier U.S. sales including at least one plate devoted to ancient coins, but it is true that those sales were less important than the current catalogue.
