1350-1364 AD. A French gold piece, based on the design of an Écu d'Or à la Chaise coin, made and pierced for use as a touchpiece, on the obverse the king enthroned within tressure with arms to right and +IOHANNES D[EI GRA FR]AN[CO]RVM REX legend, on the reverse a floriate cross in quatrefoil, trefoil in angles with +XP[C V]INCIT XPC REGN[AT] XPC [INDERAT] legend. See Friedberg, A. L. & I. S., Gold Coins of the World, France 276 for the coin design. Touchpieces were believed efficacious against the skin disease scrofula (known as King's Evil) and other afflictions that could be healed by being touched by the king (in France from the reign of Philip I, 1052-1108) and were usually in the form of gold coins or specially struck gold pieces such as this one, almost always pierced, that passed through the king's hands; in France the practice ended as recently as 1825 when Charles X (1757-1836) still directly touched victims at special ceremonies, these events sometimes involved large numbers of people; Henry IV (1553-1610) touched up to 1,500 sufferers at a time. 3.72 grams, 28mm (1"). [No Reserve] Worn from much use as a touchpiece.
