Each coin contains 92.5 percent silver. The 5 dollar coins are approx.1.5'' in diameter. The 10 dollar coins are approx. 1.75'' in diameter. The coins are in individual protective casings and fit nicely into the red felt slots in the case. Rare good condition

Rev: smoothed and engraved in small script with 'Grey's Elergy The curfew toils the knell of parting day the lowing herd wind slowly oer the lea the ploughman homeward plods his weary way and leaves the world to darkness and to me C. Moore' in nine lines. 0.82 grams. S. 4085 (coin). The lines are the first verse from Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard by Thomas Gray (published 1751). 7th century AD. Two lead disc weights comprising: one thin (about 3mm) with the impression of an inset sceatta coin of Abramson's triquetra type with looped triquetra and rosettes within a pelletted border; one thicker (about 5mm) with similar impression. 25 grams total, 21-23mm (1). From an old Hampshire collection; found Doncaster, UK. See discussion of lead weights with coin inserts in G. Williams, Anglo-Saxon and Viking coin-weights in British Numismatic Journal 4, 69 (1999); cf. Abramson, T. Sceattas. An Illustrated Guide, King's Lynn, 2006, p.104. Lead weights with inset coins and fragments of jewellery are known from the Middle Saxon period and are associated with the needs of Scandinavian traders. These two discs are set with coins of an earlier date than the Viking period types, which begin to appear in the mid-9th century (Williams, 1999, p.19). Evidence for the practice of coin-insertion in lead weights among the Anglo-Saxons is almost entirely lacking: Williams (ibid., p.20) cites one example set with a porcupine' penny of the early eighth century' in the possession of Dr. David Rogers which nevertheless may be attributed to a Scandinavian rather than an Anglo-Saxon source since English 'porcupine' type coins have been found in excavations at Ribe, Denmark. The coins may have played some part in Anglo-Scandinavian trade, although they may equally have been acquired as loot. Williams notes that there are no known examples of weights with coin inserts dating from after the unification of England under Athelstan in the second third of the 10th century. A mixed group comprising: a Roman plaque of an advancing horse; a medieval bronze strap end with knop finial; three Tudor hook fasteners; a 1717 George I farthing; three coin weights; a Georgian fob seal matrix with inset red glass intaglio of a male bust in profile; a Georgian silver cufflink. 52 grams total, 14-66mm (1/2 - 2 3/4). Found Nothamptonshire, UK. [11] Mainly fine condition.

A bronze disc brooch formed from a contemporary or earlier bronze coin by the addition of pin-lugs and catchplate; the coin with short-cross centre to the reverse, bearded bust to the obverse. 9.70 grams, 32mm (1 1/4). Property of a Middlesex gentleman; acquired in the 1980s. Cf. coin-brooch in Hammond, B. British Artefacts vol.3 - Late Saxon, Late Viking & Norman, Witham, 2013, item 1.1.1-t.
