Unattributed 17th Century Silver Supporters BadgeA very rare an interesting silver badge in the form of a crown, detailed with incised line decoration and punched pellets to resemble jewels. Pierced in several positions, possibly to be sewn on to clothing. The crown as interesting as it is hides some very useful information, its cut from a silver 400 Reis Portuguese coin that dates circa 1670-90. Traces of the coins design can be seen on the reverse. The date of the coin ties it in to the reign of James II and could represent it as being a supporters badge worn by a follower of the king during the Monmouth Rebellion. Weight: 7.09 grams. Size: 33.06.Ex A Smith Collection, Purchased from an old English collection.Note:The Monmouth Rebellion, also known as the Pitchfork Rebellion, the Revolt of the West or the West Country Rebellion, was an attempt to overthrow James II. Prince James, Duke of York, had become King of England, Scotland and Ireland upon the death of his elder brother Charles II on 6 February 1685. James II was a Roman Catholic and some Protestants under his rule opposed his kingship. James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth, the eldest illegitimate son of Charles II, claimed to be rightful heir to the throne and attempted to displace James II.
