Lot 1371

On June 29th.,1831 at Tutbury, which is around five miles from Burton-Upon-Trent, labourers at work below a bridge on the River Dove, lowering the bed of the river, againat one of the buttreses, came across a vast hoard of silver coin, indeed for forty to fifty yards in direct line with the buttress `the whole bed of the river, was one entire mass of coin`. The newspaper report also states `On Wednesday there were hundreds of labourers and others, up to their middle in water, with shovels and riddles, at work the whole day, examining this long concealed treasure, It is not the slightest exaggeration to state that upwards of 200 pieces of silver coin have been brought up at one time on a shovel. On the most moderate possible calculation , more than 20.000 pieces were found on Wednesday`. The hoard is recorded in J.D.A.Thompson, 1956, 363, `About 20,000 AR English, Irish, Scottish and Foreign [1,643 listed] with 1 AR ring`. It is quite possible this hoard was larger but of course with the scramble we will never know. The small parcel which we now offer must be very scarce and interesting, 10 pieces left in their original packets, with a contemporary newspaper cutting and a folded envelope dated 22nd. June 1831, presumably this was used to post the present coins and is worded `London June twenty two 1831` sender? and below `Wm. Pilkington Esq. Hatfield in Doncaster, inside `Messrs D. Platt`. This of course pre-dates the hoard if the original date is correct but why was it saved with the coins?. The possible answer is that the envelope was used, as we do today, just to store the pieces, The coins are typed in as stated on the envelopes, Edward I silver pennies York class IIb, Lincoln class 3, London class III f/g, London class IIIg, London? class IVb, Durham IXb, Newcastle IXb, Newcastle Xa, London Xc-f and Bury St Edmunds of Edward II, F to NVF [10]
