Lot 1050

Vespasian. AD 69-79. AV Aureus (19mm, 7.04 g, 6h). “Judaea Capta” commemorative. Uncertain mint. Struck circa AD 69-70. IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, laureate head right / IVD?E? C?PT?, palm tree; to right, Jewess, in attitude of mourning, seated right; shield to right; helmet, shield, and spear to left of palm. RIC II 1357 = Calicó 646a = BMCRE, p. 7, * and note corr. (Jewess described as sitting at foot of trophy) = Santamaria (25 May 1926), lot 236 (same dies); Hendin –; BN –; Biaggi –. Good Fine. Extremely rare, the second known. This piece confirms the authenticity of the previously known example. Future Hendin plate coin. Citing the singular Santamaria specimen as the only example of the type then known, the authors of BMCRE expressed doubt about its authenticity. This doubt was noted by the authors of the revised RIC volume, who went further, calling it “possibly a modern forgery with rev based on bronze IVDAEA CAPTA types.” None of the authors, however, detailed any specific criteria to support their allegations, or even noted that they examined the piece in hand. Nonetheless, the present coin, struck from the same dies as the Santamaria piece, is clearly authentic, thus rendering the doubts of the authors of RIC and BMCRE moot. This coin will be illustrated in the forthcoming 6th edition of David Hendin’s Guide to Biblical Coins.

Ex Triton I (2 December 1997), lot 1578.Although Paulina’s name is not mentioned by any of the ancient writers, the numismatic evidence is quite sufficient to prove that she was the wife of Maximinus I (235-238 AD) and probably the mother of the Caesar Maximus. A provincial bronze issue in her name from the Cilician mint of Anazarbus actually bears a date corresponding to the year 235/6 AD. Like her Roman issues this coin is posthumous, but it does accord her the imperial title of Augusta suggesting that she was still alive at the time of her husband`s accession but died shortly afterward. The single surviving stone inscription in which she is mentioned (CIL x. 5054) gives a fuller version of her name and titles, Diva Caecilia Paulina Pia Augusta.

Extremely rare late issue of this remarkable empress. Ex Julius Caesar and His Legacy (Numismatic Fine Arts, 13 May 1991), lot 146; Numismatic Fine Arts XXII (1 June 1989), lot 163.From the NFA catalogue: “The empress Galla Placidia had a most extraordinary career spanning the first half of the turbulent fifth century. Born about 388, she was the daughter of Theodosius the Great by his second wife Galla, and half-sister of Arcadius and Honorius. Taken prisoner by Alaric during the sack of Rome by the Visigoths in 410, she was eventually married to his successor, Ataulf. Following Ataulf’s death she was ransomed to the Romans for 600,000 measures of grain, and in 417 married the general Constantius by whom she had a son, the future emperor Valentinian III, and a daughter, Honoria. She acted as regent for the first twelve years of her son’s reign (425-437), but then gradually faded into the background as the political influence of the general Aetius increased. Her final years were devoted to the erection of sacred buildings in Ravenna, and her tomb, which contained also the remains of Honorius and Constantius III, is still to be seen in the city.Coins honoring Galla Placidia were struck both in the western empire, under her son Valentinian III, and in the East by her nephew Theodosius II. She may already have held the rank of Augusta under Honorius, but if not she certainly received it in 424 when Valentinian was created Caesar. This attractive solidus, issued from an uncertain Asian mint, may be closely dated by Theodosius II’s titles which appear on the reverse. His forty-second imperatorial acclamation, corresponding to the years of his reign, covers the period 10 January 443 to 10 January 444, whilst the celebration of his eighteenth and final consulship on 1 January 444 indicates that the issue to which the present coin belongs had ceased before the end of the year 443. After the reign of Theodosius II the seated figure of Constantinopolis disappeared from the gold coinage of the eastern empire, not to be seen again until the reign of Justin II more than a century later.”

Ex Halliwell Collection (Baldwin’s 68, 28 September 2010), lot 3414.There is speculation that the obverse of this coin actually depicts Amastris, a niece of Darios III of Persia, who became a pawn in the complex dynastic quarrels that followed the death of Alexander. She had been given as wife to Alexander`s general Krateros, but was dismissed when Krateros arranged a marriage for himself with the daughter of Antipater. Amastris then married Dionysos, tyrant of Herakleia, by whom she had three children before his death in 306 BC. In 302 BC, she married Lysimachos of Thrace, who soon acquired a more profitable alliance by wedding Arsinoë, the daughter of Ptolemy I Soter of Egypt. Amastris then retired to the territory of Herakleia, where she founded a new city named after herself. She was not destined to find peace, however; in 288 BC her two covetous sons had her drowned and seized her city for themselves.

DOC 1; Berk 319 (this coin); SB 1859. EF, toned. A well struck example. From the Collection of the MoneyMuseum, Zurich. Ex “An Important Private Collection of Byzantine Coins” (Sotheby’s New York, 2 November 1998), lot 539.Eudocia ruled as regent from the death of her husband Constantine X in May of 1067 until the end of the year. At the time, the empire was facing a military crisis in the east as the Seljuq Turks advanced further into Asia Minor, and the prevailing feeling was that a competent military leader should be emperor. Eudocia, despite having declared that she would never remarry, took the hand of Romanus IV Diogenes on 1 January 1068. Romanus’ own rule lasted a little over two and a half years, as he was captured by the Turks at the Battle of Mantzikert in August of 1071. Eudocia was re-established as regent for two months before being coerced into retiring to a convent. Whether this issue dates to her first or second term as regent has been debated, but the former seems more logical. While by no means abundant, the output of this coinage seems too large to be condensed into the short span of her second regency.

Bendall, “An Early Coinage of the ‘Empire’ of Trebizond?,” NumCirc CX.3 (June 2002), p. 114, fig. 1 = DOC 1 = SB 2148 var. (star on Virgin’s maphorion, rev. legend correctly spelled) . EF. Excellent strike. Rare. From the Jonathan K. Kern Collection. This coin belongs to a rare issue that is usually attributed to Nicaea, but Bendall`s analyses (op. cit. above) of these coins reveal that they are more likely early issues of Trebizond under Andronicus Gidon. It could possibly be his second issue after a seemingly unique copper trachy with his name and the title “Comnenus”, a family from which he did not hail. The extreme rarity of that issue may indicate that such a claim was not well received. The icon of Christ Chalkites was highly venerated. It was kept in vestibule of the imperial palace at Constantinople and may refer to hopes of a reunited Byzantine Empire.
