IRAN. PARTHIAN KINGDOM. Phraates IV, 38-2BC. BI tetradrachm, 38-32BC. Phraates IV was King of the Parthian Empire from 37 to 2 BC. He was the son and successor of Orodes II, who was given the throne after the death of his brother Pacorus I. Phraates IV soon murdered all his brothers, and also possibly his father, perhaps to secure his position on the throne. Due to the active military conflicts, Parthian coinage observed a great debasement for Tetradrachms beginning with the reign of Orodes II, with silver content eventually falling below 50% in circulation during the early first century A.D. They became bullion coinage and ultimately disappeared shortly after the advent of the Sasanians in the third century A.D. The output in coin production under Orodes II and Phraates IV is by far the largest of the whole Parthian monetary history. Significant iconographic developments can be observed in Orodes's tetradrachms, which abandoned the reverse image of the Parthian archer employed since Mithradates II and replaced it with the portrayal of the seated king receiving homage from the goddess of fortune, Tyche. Occasionally, other iconography was used, but the image of the king with Tyche dominates the tetradrachm reverses until the end of the dynasty. As such, the iconography of Phraates IV mostly kept the same style of Parthian coinage that was used under his father. The obverse of his coins portrays him with short hair and a beard, along with a visible moustache, and a royal wart on his brow.Diademed and draped bust of Phraates left, royal wart on brow / Phraates seated right, receiving palm from Tyche, holding cornucopia, standing left; BACIΛEΩC BACΛEΩN ΛPCAKOY EYEPΓETOY ΔIKAIOY EΠIΦΛNOYC ΦIΛEΛΛHNOCAU Strike: 4/5 Surface: 3/5, overstruck. GREECE. BYZANTINE EMPIRE. Justinian I (527-565). Bronze follis, 541/2. Constantinople. Justinian I 482-565, inherited the throne from his uncle Justin I in 527. Justinian is best known for his very ambitious Renovatio imperii, or Restoration of the (Roman) Empire. Ultimately this ambition was only partly realised but still impressive, resulting in the reconquest of Italy, Spain, and North Africa from the Ostrogoth and Vandal tribes. This piece, introduced in 538 at the height of Justinian's power, is of the "heavy" variety, averaging 50mm in diameter and 20g in weight. The purpose of this unusually large coin has been the subject of considerable academic debate. It has been suggested by some that an influx of gold from the North African conquest brought with it inflationary pressures that led to the devaluation of the gold solidus in relation to the copper follis, and that this new size was an attempt to remedy the disrupted gold/copper ratio. Others have argued that this coin's purpose was propaganda and PR. The larger coin providing a larger canvas for Justinian to display his success and prestige to the wider population. Regardless, the experiment with the larger follis didn't work for very long as the weight and size was quickly reduced soon after. Helmeted, cuirassed bust facing holding globus cruciger and shield; cross to right "DN IVSTINIANVS PP AVG" / Large M between A/N/N/O and numerals representing the regnal year, cross above, officina letter beneath, CON in exergue.Ch VF Strike: 4/5 Surface: 2/5, slight bend. AUSTRALIA. Victoria, 1837-1901. Gold sovereign, 1872/1 M. Melbourne. Shield; 2 over 1. In 1871 it was decided to open a second mint in Australia, this time in Melbourne, to service the increasing demand for gold coins. From now coins would bear the same design as the British sovereigns, identified by a mint mark in the lower section of the reverse of the coin. Dies of the new designs and bearing the date 1871 were prepared in London and left Southampton via boat on 30 September 1871. However, after transferring the package to the steamer Rangoon on 1 November, the boat hit a rock on the Southwest coast of Ceylon. Despite this terrible fate all passengers and a small number of packages were saved. The 1872/1 overdate is testament to the survival of at least one of the 1871 dies as local engraver Julius Hogarth was commissioned by the Melbourne mint to create the overdate die. An extremely rare variety with a captivating story and truly historical significance.Young head left, WW on truncation; date below, with 2 struck over 1; VICTORIA DEI GRATIA. / Crowned shield within wreath; mintmark M and national emblems below; BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID: DEF:.
