Rev: VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM legend with Victory advancing right, head left, holding wreath and cross on globe, star in right field; mintmark CONOB in exergue. Cf. An interesting coin with the wide flan around the edge typical of a tremissis; in addition the mintmark CONOB shows that the dies were planned for a gold coin, not silver (CON = Constantinopolis or its weight standard, OB = obryzum = refined or pure gold) and was never used on silver coins. A pair of coin weighing scales with brass pans, green cords and steel beam with red silk suspender, including matched and marked knobbed weights for the gold sovereign, half sovereign, guinea, half guinea and third guinea, each marked with the denomination and some with a 'lion' verification punch; the set contained in a black ornamented japanned steel oval case with hinged lid, fabric lined, the weights held in two drilled wood blocks. See S&M 115 for a similar set (dated to 1817). 113 grams total, 12.5cm (case). (5"). Scales and weights very fine condition; case scuffed externally. Rare set and weight combination.

This lot has been authenticated and graded by a specialist independent coin grading service and is encapsulated with a unique reference number that is traceable through the records of that organisation. (33.47 grams with capsule). "CGS graded AU 75 (= almost uncirculated), very light gold tone. Scarce."

Lot 2373

Dated 1734 AD. A Mexico mint silver 8 reals coin (a 'piece of eight'), with silver mount inscribed TREASURE FROM 'HOLLANDIA' SUNK 1743 sterling silver around the edge, with ornate suspension loop. KM# 94. The Hollandia was a Dutch East India Company trading vessel of 40 guns, sailing on her maiden voyage from Texel, captained by Jan Kelder, with 30 passengers, a crew of 276 and a heavy cargo of silver and other trading goods. She was sailing to Batavia in the East Indies and strayed off course at night in the Engish Channel before colliding with Gunner Rock off the Isles of Scilly on 3rd July 1743. Attempts were made by the Dutch East India Company to salvage the silver but this was unsuccessful due to the depth of water and limited diving capabilities then possible. The wreck site was re-discovered in 1971 and a major sale of the coins and artefacts recovered was held in Penzance, Cornwall on 21st September 1973. 26.31 grams. Dated 1737 AD. Pillar dollar. Obv: crowned arms with moneyer initial M over F left and mark of value 8 (reales) to right and PHILIP V D G HISPAN ET IND REX legend. Rev: crowned double globe between crowned pillars with VTRAQUE VNUM legend, date and 'o over M' mintmark for Mexico mint. KM# 103. The Rooswijk was a Dutch East Indiaman which sank with the loss of all hands on the notorious Goodwind Sands, off the east coast of Kent, in December 1739; she carried silver ingots and coin with other cargo while sailing to the East Indies; following shifting of the sands, she was discovered and excavated in 2005. 26.15 grams.
