According to the Factory letter, this was shipped as a standard 1861 Navy with wood stocks and shipped to Colt's New York office on March 7th, 1861 in a shipment of only five guns. It was obviously engraved by one of the New York Colt contract engravers during the period of Gustave Young (1852 to 1869). The style of engraving, with its fine scroll work and punch-dot background, is the type of work done in the shop of Gustave Young; very similar pattern of engraving can be seen on page 65 in the book of Colt Engraving by Wilson. The frame exhibits nearly full coverage engraving, as does the backstrap and hammer; trigger guard and butt are also engraved and the barrel exhibits engraving on over half its surface. The cylinder exhibits a strong Naval battle scene but is not engraved. Exhibits all matching numbers, including wedge and cylinder. All metal surfaces are beautifully silver plated, having never been cleaned, and have taken on the rainbow coin finish. The period original one piece ivory grips sport full checkering on both panels. Cylinder shows no burn. Strong clean bore and perfect action. Gun remains in all original condition as it was when period engraved; the workmanship is flawless. It is quite evident this highly decorated firearm was intended as a very special gift or possession for someone of means or importance. Given the date of manufacture, this revolver was quite likely intended for someone involved in the Civil War. Spectacular period master engraved Colt 1861 Navy. Serial Number-6601; Manufacturer-Colt; Model-1861 Navy; Caliber-.36 percussion; Barrel Length-7-1/2"; FFL Status-Antique; CORRECTION: The triggerguard bow is stamped with an “R”, which may signifies rejection or factory return. The engraving appears to be factory, as well as the checkered ivory grips.

A LARGE AN IMPORTANT BATTLE OF WATERLOO RUMMER, the flared bowl cut with flutes below an engraved frieze of the battle scene, the reverse with an urn of flowers, on a knopped stem and circular foot, c.1840, 9.5" high, 6" dia. In the background, a figure points his risen hat towards the enemy, perhaps representing the Duke of Wellington commanding his troops to the final advance. In the foreground a man, leaning on his sword for support, is helped to his feet by a comrade. This probably represents Field Marshal Henry William Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey, whose leg was severely damaged on the final day of the battle. According to anecdote, upon injury Paget exclaimed, "By God, sir, I've lost my leg!", to which Wellington replied, "By God, sir, so you have!". In forming this composition the engraver would probably have drawn on numerous accounts of the Duke of Wellington's celebrated victory over Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. One example of such a source is George Cruickshank's "Historical Account of the Battle of Waterloo", published 1817, which contained plans, maps and engraved views of the battle. In addition, contemporary prints of the battle were in wide circulation at the time. Cf: For a coin rummer of similar form dated 1843, see Charles Hajdermach, "British Glass 1800-1914" (Woodbridge, 1991), p. 152, pl. 116. For another rummer of related form engraved with Neptune and signed, T. Hudson, Newcastle, see Hugh Wakefield, "Nineteenth Century British Glass" (London, 1982), p. 84, pl. 80. Provenance: The Buxton Collection of engraved glass

Provenance: The Buxton Collection of engraved glass
