Edward the Confessor AR penny of bust facing/small cross type (of the period 1062-1065) of the Hastings Mint. Obverse bust facing, bearded, wearing arched crown, legend “Eadpard Re”, reverse small cross, legend Dunninc on Hest, VF (part of flan edge missing, hairline crack on flan) Plate 6 Note: It is perhaps worthy of note that this coin of Hastings would have been in circulation at the time of the Battle.
Spanish America: Three dollars, salvaged from the wreck of HMS Thetis: one, of Charles III (no date remains) bears an impression from another coin and is badly corroded; the other two are completely encrusted.Note: Ex Wallis and Wallis sale 114 (August 1964), Ex RUSI Museum. HMS Thetis was en route from Rio de Janiero to England under the command of Captain Samuel Burgess with over $800,000 when, on 5th December 1830 she was wrecked at Cape Frio, Brazil, 28 mariners losing their lives. Attempts to salvage the cargo were put in the charge of Captain Dickenson of HMS Lightning who, with diving bells and a 150 feet derrick mounted on the cliff face, managed to recover a significant proportion of the dollars. Captain Burgess faced a Court Martial and lost 1 years seniority, the Court judging that too much navigation was down to dead reckoning with not enough sounding being taken.
