A silver crossbow brooch with tubular crossbar, three onion-shaped knops with beaded collars, deep trapezoidal-section bow, D-section footplate with chamfered edges and C-shaped detailing. Cf. A silver finger ring comprising a round-section hoop with scooped shoulders, tall facetted bezel with carinated rim, inset carnelian cloison with intaglio Mercury standing with caduceus and coin-purse. 5.74 grams, 31mm overall, 16.21mm internal diameter (approximate size British K 1/2, USA 5 1/2, Europe 10.58, Japan 10) (1 1/4"). An oolitic limestone, slightly larger than life, bust of the Emperor Caracalla, head turned to the left, showing curly hair, beard and with an intense gaze with squared off base; of provincial workmanship. Property of a London lady; by inheritance; formerly acquired by her father in Europe in the 1940s. The features of the bust bear a striking resemblance to to the portraits seen on the coinage of Caracalla (198-217 AD); the limestone possibly being quarried in the mountainous regions of the Balkans. Named Lucius(?) Septimus Bassianus, Caracalla (born 4 April 188 at Lugdunum) was eldest son of Emperor Septimius Severus of the Severan dynasty; Caracalla, with his family, including his brother Geta, arrived in Britain in 208 AD where they campaigned until the death of Septimius in 211 AD. After this, the brothers fell into dispute until Geta was murdered while attending a meeting of reconciliation with his brother in December the same year; Caracalla then slaughtered thousands of 'supporters' of Geta before campaigning in Germany; eventually being assassinated in 217 AD. Very fine condition.

Obv: stipple engraved in lines 'George / Wilson / Died the 7th / of December / Aged 21 / Fought tom / welsh the 6th / Manchester / 18 52' with heart above and below having carved edges and within trailing wreath. Rev: profile bust with incuse GEORGIUS III REX legend of normal coin with stipple engraved 'George' left and 'Bevan' right of bust. 25.23 grams. Although very much in the style and workmanship of the contemporary convict love tokens, this example most unusually commemorates the death of young George Wilson, the day after he fought Tom Welsh in a match at Manchester held 6th December 1852; prize fights at this time were with bare knuckles without any of the modern rules and lasting an indefinite number of rounds (bouts of over 100 rounds are recorded) and only finishing when one fighter finally failed to 'toe the line' or 'threw in the towel'.
