S. 824; N. -; See EMC 2012.0236 (this coin); see Metcalf, Thrymsas and Sceattas, volume 3, pages 435-436 for discussion of the type and figures. Found Tiptree, Essex, 2010; recorded with the Early Medieval Corpus, Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. It is suggested by Marian Archibald that the obverse legend is an abbreviation for MONITA S(an)C(t)ORVM and that this type has affinities with Series Q and T; the bust has obvious similarities to those seen on late Roman types with most findspots recorded from eastern England; this example lacks the cross usually seen at the end of the legend so would appear top be a previously unrecorded variant and the composition by XRF analysis is 97% silver, 1% gold, 1% copper, 1.5% iron. Obv: neatly engraved with Relic of the ROYAL GEORGE Sunk 1782 raised 1840 legend in five lines. Rev: smoothed with nicks around circumference. 3.77 grams. (1 1/4"). HMS Royal George was a 100-gun first-rate ship of the line warship, launched in 1756 and the largest British warship at that time. She saw service during the Seven Years` War and as Sir Edward Hawke`s flagship. While undergoing maintenance off Portsmouth, she sank with the loss of over 800 lives, one of the great disasters in British waters. Attempts were made to raise the vessel, both for salvage and because it was a major hazard to navigation with six cannon being recovered in 1782. In 1839 and 1840 Major-General Charles Pasley of the Royal Engineers did recovery work, including lifting another 12 cannon and other items and culminated in the lifting of the keel and major timbers. Some of the bronze cannon were melted down to make the base to the Nelson`s Column and this item was made from a coin recovered from the wreck.[No Reserve] Extremley fine.Starting Price: £5
