A William IV presentation snuff box by C Rawlings & W Summers London 1834, of rectangular outline with waisted body, the sides and base decorated with engine turning, the lid engraved 'This box / is composed of part of the treasure sunk/ in His Majestys's late frigate Thetis / of Cape Frio in Brazil/ and recovered from the bottom of the open sea / after being there upwards of 13 months / by Captain Thomas Dickinson RN', the base in set with an 1821 8 Reales coin 7.5cm x 5cm x 2cm 4.7oz Under the command of Captain S. Burgess, the ship sank on the 4 December 1830 after crashing into the rocks at the base of Cabo Frio, north of Rio de Janeiro, because the captain relied on dead reckoning rather than taking soundings. Among its valuable cargo were silver bars, plates, coins and some gold. Twenty-eight lives were lost and subsequent storms broke the wreck up, spreading its cargo over the sea-bed. John Christian Scetky painted two paintings now in the National Maritime Museum in London, both depicting the salvaging of the treasure.
