846-861 AD or later. A gold pendant formed from a coin of the caliph al-Mutawakkil (232-247 AH) with a later ribbed and beaded suspension loop. 4.16 grams, 24mm including loop (1"). Property of a London gentleman; part of his family collection since the 1970s. See Mitchiner, Michael, Oriental Coins and their Values, 2010, vol.1, no.211, for coin type. Islamic coins were traded across the Viking world and have been discovered as grave goods or in hoards (both coins and as jewellery items) in Scandinavia and the Baltic area. Very fine condition.

Lot 1267

8th-9th century AD. A bronze figurine of a female modelled in the half-round, standing with hands raised to the braided hair; punched annulets for the breasts and navel, incised lines to the groin; possibly the goddess Sif, wife of Thor. 21 grams, 46mm (1 3/4").[No Reserve] Fine condition Property of an American collector; acquired from the New York coin fair. The figure is modelled with prominent hair which is accentuated by the hands gripping it at the sides of the head. In the Icelandic Prose Edda the story is related of how Loki cut off the goddess's locks, which angered her husband, Þórr (Thor); in order to avoid a beating, Loki persuaded two dwarf artisans to forge a new head of hair from gold for her. The false hair at once began to grow like real hair when it was placed on her head. The goddess's hair is probably emblematic of the crop of ripened corn which has to be cut down at harvest before it can grow back in the spring..

The diameter of this obverse would be suitable for a coin of 2 or 5 francs module but all Belgian currency coins of Albert use an unserifed font, as do his military medals (which also show a plain bust); this die could be either for a pattern coin during the First World War period or, perhaps, be for a commemorative medal. See Early Medieval Corpus, Cambridge, reference EMC 2016.0100 (this coin"). There are affinities with several sub-types within series Q (and elswehere) but it is suggested that it is a new sub-type falling within group 65, series Q, block 3 and the dies, of good style, do appear significantly different from any previously recorded; worthy of more research. See Portable Antiquities Scheme, reference KENT-705241; see Treasure Act, reference 2014 T384. Coins altered to represent higher denominations in this way are rarely seen; to have two in the same small hoard can hardly be coincidental; the British Museum listing of the hoard refers to the halfgroat to threepence coin but does not note the same details for the other. [2, No Reserve] Fair and good fine. Very rare examples of contemporary fraud.

Lot 2648

Host coin dated 1792 AD. Spanish-American 8 reales, Lima mint. Obv: profile bust with date below and CAROLVS IIII DEI GRATIA legend and oval countermark of the bust of George III. Rev: crowned arms between pillars with HISPAN ET IND REX legend with monogram LIMAE for Lima mint, mark of value 8R and assayer initials I J. 26.97 grams. S. 3765A; ESC 133; KM# 97 for host coin. S. 3778 variant; Peck 1248 variant. This is a most curious piece; the single 'broad arrow' to the obverse and the two similar arrows within the date to the reverse have clearly been cut into the dies resulting in them being raised on this coin; the elements of the arrows, formed each from three lines, have been engraved rather than punched. Worthy of further research. [No Reserve] Good very fine. Extremely rare; apparently unrecorded.
