Interest of Sir Terry FROST R.A (1915-2003)Three publications from the library of Sir Terry Frost R.A;Hepworth by A.M.Hammacher, from the Modern Sculptors series.Published by Allert de Lange, Amsterdam, 1958.Inscribed in blue ink, 'For Terry, Barbara, Christmas 1958'Note: Frost worked as an assistant to Barabara Hepworth between the years of 1950-52.Colour: A manual of its Theory and Practice by H.Barrett CarpenterPublished by B.T.Batsford Ltd, London, 1933 edition. HardbackInscribed T.FROSTContaining a double sided page of notes on colour with sketches and diagrams in pencil. The Materials of the Artist and their use in Painting with Notes on The Techniques Of The Old Masters by Max Doerner.Published by George G.Harrap & Co Ltd, London 1935.Inscribed in black ink, 'Terry Frost 1948' in Frost's hand.Containing a small black and white photograph of Frost as a young man, wearing his trademark beret. The artist is seated on a high stone wall, palette balanced on his knee, painting at an easel.Colour and form and his extraordinary use of colour and form, are two of the most important aspects of Frost's work. The page of notes in the Barrett Carpenter book on Colour illustrate how much thought and study went into Frost's artists practice. He held his first solo exhibition in 1952 so his time spent working for Barbara Hepworth in the early 1950s must have been a very informative period for the emerging artist. Books were valuable and useful tools in the 1940s and 50s and these would have been important volumes in the artist's library. As such, they are an interesting conduit back to a critically important period in the life of one of our most celebrated abstract artists.
