Collection of leaves from Armenian Biblical and liturgical manuscripts, all on paper[Armenia, fourteenth to seventeenth century]Four leaves: (a) single large leaf from a Biblical codex, with double column of 35 lines of erkatgir, capitals opening each major section, torn and darkened at edges, folded across middle, somewhat scuffed, one edge reinforced with sections from another leaf, 480 by 310mm., most probably fourteenth century; (b) two leaves most probably from a single liturgical manual, each with double column of 29/30 lines of bolorgir, red rubrics and initials, the first with large opening initial formed from a pink penwork bird, a stylised church in same penwork in the opposite margin, large floral headband with pink flower heads on a blue ground surmounted by two birds holding foliage in their beaks at head of text, the second leaf with two decorated initials formed from birds and foliage, and a large two-faced bird enclosed within foliage and a human-headed drollery with a large hooked nose and the body of a bird in the margins, second leaf with small tears to edges and slight water damage in places, overall both good condition, 275 by 180mm., sixteenth or seventeenth century; (c) opening leaf from a Biblical text (probably a Gospel), with 3 lines of text formed from coloured birds and foliage edged with liquid gold penwork, the large initial formed from an angel with pink wings in a blue cloak holding out a golden book, these below an elaborate half-page headband with blue interlace knotwork with red flowers and coloured foliage over a dull gold ground, this surmounted by two facing birds and with a full decorated border of coloured foliage on gold grounds holding up a golden crucifix, some scuffing and losses to gold and paint, the leaf laid down on modern paper and pasted to modern black paper mount, fair condition, 240 by 158mm., seventeenth centuryItem (a) is unusual in its combination of Erkatagir (iron script), the oldest form of Armenian writing, with the use of paper rather than parchment (see Treasures from the Ark: 1700 Years of Armenian Christian Art, 2001, no. 100 for another example of the same late date). The script here denotes respect for the subject matter.
ÆŸ A practical manual of the laws of the Venetian republic, in Latin, decorated manuscript on paper[Veneto (either Venice or Treviso), late fifteenth century or early sixteenth century]84 leaves (plus 3 endleaves at front, and a single endleaf at back), complete, collation: i-x8, xi4 (these blank), xii4, catchwords and contemporary quire and leaf signatures, single column of approximately 30 lines in a semi-humanist hand, red rubrics and contents list, simple red initials (some in thin and crude red penwork), some running titles for a few leaves (now faded to fawn), first endleaf decorated with full page coat-of-arms between and beneath sets of initials 'JM' and within a wreath with coloured dots perhaps indicating gemstones, this page showing trimming of volume during last binding, small spots and stains, some text faded or washed out at edges, but overall in presentable and solid condition, 192 by 150mm.; sixteenth-century limp parchment binding with flap, reusing small scraps of an early printed religious work as binding material, this binding with some repairs to holes and splits, remains of two paper labels laid onto spine Provenance:Written for, and perhaps by, Jacobus Menutiis/Minutiis: his ex libris marks three times on the front endleaves and his arms and initials also there. The text is thoroughly that of the Veneto (see below) and Jacobus must have practised law in that region. The text:The origin of this book in the Veneto is beyond doubt. It opens with a copy of a document dated 1290 that addresses Christ, the Trinity, the Virgin and St. Mark (the patron of Venice), citing the Venetian doges and texts to do with instruments of their authority there, as well as the scholar Marcus Zeno "de venetii". Within the main text itself, it cites sample documents of Venetian origin, such as that issued by Antonius Venerius, the doge of Venice in 1382-1400. However, there are also legal cases and explanations here that mention Treviso, a town a few miles to the north east of Venice and also under the rule of the doges, and the book may well come from there. The main text here is a lengthy legal textbook (fols. 1r-76v), arranged in ten chapters, which gives a thorough grounding in the civil law of the Venetian Republic, including sections on notaries (public and those of the chancellor), an array of types of wills, sample legal cases and pleas, sentences for these, fugitives, petitions, pledges for debts, violent criminal cases such as injury that results in bloodshed and homicide, as well as many others. We have not been able to trace another copy. After a single blank gathering, the main hand then added an alphabetised index of solutions to legal problems covered in the text, this named the Ordo solutionis and ascribed to the city of Treviso. To view a video of this item, click here.
Bolognese School, circa 1600Portrait of a Knight of the Order of Santiago, bust-length, in black costume embroidered with the Order's red cross of Saint James with a white ruff oil on metal, oval5.7 x 4cm (2 1/4 x 1 9/16in).Footnotes:From 1523 the Spanish crown held the office of Grand Master of the Order of Santiago, although entrance was not restricted to nobles of Spain exclusively, and many of her members were prominent Catholic Europeans in general. Stylistically the present miniature portrait would indicate an artist working in Bologna in the circle around Annibale Carracci (1560-1609) and his brother, Agostino (1557-1602) and cousin, Ludovico (1555-1619), whose oeuvre can notoriously be difficult to distinguish. The present sitter, in order to join the Order of Santiago must have proved that he, his parents, and his grandparents were of noble descent by blood and not by privilege, and had never worked in manual or industrial labour. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Howard Koslow (1924 - 2016) "Tomb of the Unknowns" Signed lower left. Acrylic painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Proofcard for America's Greatest Military Heroes series, postmarked November 11, 1993. The "Tomb of the Unknowns" is, perhaps, the most sacred shrine to military heroes in the country. Originally designated the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, this monument was built to honor all American soldiers killed during wars in the 20th century. The monument was established in March, 1921 when Congress, following the custom of European countries, approved the building of a national shrine to honor soldiers who could not be identified after they died in World War I. The first Unknown Soldier died in Europe during that war. He was selected on October 23, 1921, from among four unidentified American soldiers who were to be buried in military cemeteries in France. The shrine's name was changed in 1958 to the "Tomb of the Unknowns" when two servicemen, one killed in World War II and the other from Korea were interred. Since then, an American soldier who fought in Vietnam has also been interred. The Tomb has a perpetual honor guard by a member of the Sentinels of The Old Guard. A Sentinel is always there, in light or dark, eyes straight ahead, uniform immaculate. He paces back and forth while swiftly moving through the manual of arms: 21 paces south, left face, 21 seconds, left face, left shoulder arms, about face and so on. The 21 paces and seconds are symbolic of the 21-gun salute, the military's highest honor. Image Size: 13.75 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20.25 x 18 in. Framed behind glass. (B10468)

1996 Nissan 200 SX, 1998 cc. Registration number P713 SRH. Chassis number JN1GBAS14U0010758. Engine number SR20-278357.Japanese cars were of little interest to UK enthusiasts in the '70s and '80s but that changed dramatically in the 1990's with the arrival of a whole slew of turbocharged road rockets like the Toyota Supra, Subaru Impreza and Mitsubishi 3000GT which could give even Porsche and Ferrari drivers a fright. Nissan joined the fray with brutish sports models like the Skyline and the 300ZX and the smaller 180SX which immediately won the Car of the Year award when it was launched in Japan in 1989. Marketed as the 200SX in Europe, it used the rear-wheel drive Silvia S13 chassis mated to a 167bhp 1.8 turbo CA18DET engine with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed auto gearbox. Quick, capable and beautifully balanced, it was also eminently tunable and soon gained cult status on the burgeoning drift scene, power sliding its way around old airfields the length and breadth of the country. In 1994 the 200SX morphed into the longer, wider S14 version, now with a 2.0 engine. SRH was first registered in August 1996 and our vendor purchased it in February 1997, first in his business name and then from 2011 his own. During his ownership it has always been serviced with 15 stamps in the book, the last being at 64,184 miles in August 2017 since when the MOTs have taken the mileage to 65,508 miles. He has recently purchased a new car and this is now surplus to requirements. It has had a new turbo fitted and the engine and gearbox are said to be in very good order, as is the interior which has a CD player fitted.Sold with the V5C, MOT until December 2020, service book and other original books.
1983 Mercedes Benz 380 SL R107, 3839cc. Registration number TDA 404Y. Chassis number 107 04522024643. Engine number 1169622015004. In 1980, Mercedes-Benz revamped its SL lineup of sporting luxury convertibles with the introduction of the 380SL. The 380 was a further development of the R107 chassis, which was first used in 1972 by the 350SL, and then later by the 450SL. Like its forebears the 380SL was a heady mix of V-8 power, refined luxury, and sporty underpinnings, and it was as a very popular model during its production run. The 380SL, so-named for its 3.8-litre V-8, had a smaller engine than the 450SL and was consequently 120 pounds lighter. The new engine was designed with emissions controls in mind while the 450SL's engine was not, which meant that the two engines were relatively equal in terms of power (155 hp in the 380SL vs. 160 hp in the 450SL) despite the difference in their displacements. Performance was similar for the two cars, as was fuel economy. Outside of the engine, the 380SL also received a new four-speed automatic transmission, which further enhanced distance driving. Suspension, meanwhile, continued to be the same fully independent setup as in the earlier cars, and four-wheel disc braking remained standard. The standard transmission provided a top speed of 130mph and a very respectable 0-62mph in 8.8 seconds. As with the previous generations of SLs, the vehicle came as an open roadster with a removable hardtop roof. The R107 body shape went on to become one of the longest running styles from Mercedes-Benz, remaining in production until 1989 with some 13 variants during the production run. The 380SL ended production in 1985, at which point it was replaced by the 560SL. TDA was first registered on the 12th May 1983 in thistle green metallic with green sports check cloth interior by the Nayland Motor Company of West Glamorgan to Mr Curtis for his wife. It has optional extras such as cruise control and rear seats. Brought up to Yorkshire it then was serviced by H. Nightingales of Beeford as per the recommended intervals until 1995 (13 stamps in the service book), it also had a cherished number plate change to SXC100. In 1995 it was sold to Ron Simpson who had it serviced by S.M. Autocare of Pickering at 86,326, 92,085 and 98,432 miles. In 2003 it was bought by Arthur Paice who took the cherished plate of it and it reverted to the original TDA 404Y. He sold it to a Mr Booth in July 2005 with a mileage of 106,856 at that years MOT. Since then it has been serviced and MOT'd by Brain Kitt Motors of Driffield and led a pampered life. Over the years it has seen little use and often sorned, especially as ill health restricted him using it; the MOT in May 2019 was at 111,959 miles only the 3 added since the year before (the trip to the MOT station). Sold in 2019 to its current owner and our vendor who has rarely used it. TDA is a rare example of a full service history car that has spent its life around the Driffield area and can be highly recommended to the next custodian. Sold with the V5C, MOT until May 2020, large history folder, removable hard top, service book, owners manual; it will be driven to the auction.
2000 Kawasaki VN1500 J-1 Drifter, 1470cc. Registration number J15 OOK. Frame number JKBVNT50JJA002441. Engine number VNT50AE075821. The Drifter is a fuel-injected, shaft driven and water cooled, part of the Kawasaki Vulcan line of cruiser motorcycles created in the classic style lines of the 1940s Indian Chief, built between 1999 and 2005. The Drifter was the result of a discussion between Ken Boyko, Don Emde, son of Indian legend Floyd Emde and John Hoover of Kawasaki. Retro motorcycles were becoming the rage and the question was posed "What would a modern up-to-date Indian look like and what kind of technology would it have?" They enlisted Denny Berg of Time Machines Inc. to build such a machine. They gave him an early 1995 Classic and the drawing and turned him loose. The final result was a motorcycle called the "Super Chief", which was taken to several shows in 1996/97 and was such a hit with the riding public that Kawasaki took the Super Chief to Japan and put it into production. Due to patent law they couldn't use the Chief moniker and up until its release the name had not been settled on. The Drifters are intended to be a "tribute" to the 1948 Indian Chief and so closely resembles the Indian Chief of the late 1940's that the uninitiated mistake it for an "old" Indian. The Drifter's design drew a positive response from reviewers who liked the Indian Chief's deeply valanced classic fender skirts as opposed to the more traditional motorcycle fender style. Rear air shock absorbers, original swingarm arrangement, and progressive front suspension made it a comfortable cruiser capable of covering great distances comfortably. OOK was first registered in September 2000 and serviced by KJM Superbike of Wigan at 794 miles the following year, serviced again at 2,047 miles, 2004, 2,095 miles in 2006, 2,260 in 2008, and at 3,560 miles. Purchased by our vendor in April of this year at 23,485 miles but he finds it too heavy to use. Sold with V5C, MOT until April 2021, complete MOT history back to 2003, confirming the current mileage, service book and owners manual. The machine has been well looked after and started up easily when viewed for photography and it certainly has street presence.
2008 Royal Enfield Bullet 500 Electra, 499 cc. Registration number LK08 MXA. Frame number E3AHBST56C001029. Engine number 6LS501029D. The Royal Enfield Bullet was originally a British overhead valve single cylinder four-stroke motorcycle made by Royal Enfield in Redditch, Worcestershire, but now produced by Royal Enfield Motors, the successor to the British company, at Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in India. The Royal Enfield Bullet has the longest production run of any motorcycle having remained continuously in production since 1948. The Bullet marque is even older, and has passed 75 years of continuous production. The Royal Enfield and Bullet names derive from the company's links with the Royal Small Arms Factory in Enfield, London. The British company produced many noteworthy motorcycles over the next seven decades until the '70s when it folded. Manufacture continued in India, though the bikes were predominantly intended for local use and were not widely exported. In 1995 Enfield of India bought the rights to the name "Royal Enfield" and began renewed development efforts. Modern carburetors, five-speed transmissions and new twin-leading-shoe front brake systems were notable improvements. MXA is a three owner example is fitted with the lean burn engine, a five speed gearbox operated on the left and electric start with only some 5700 miles from new it offers the perfect mixture of classic motorcycling on a modern machine with an amazing history. Purchased in these rooms on the 31st July 2016 with a mileage of 5,345 it has hardly been used by our vendor. In October 2106 he replaced the headlight rim and gear lever with Indian imports. Sold with the V5C, current MOT until 22nd July 2020, old MOT's and the service manual.
