1936 Rover 12 Open four-seater Tourer Reg.no. AY 609 Chassis no. 641572 Engine no. MC11143A The new 12hp Rover was launched in 1934 and was part of the new range introduced by the Wilks brothers. It had a new 1496cc, four cylinder engine producing 53bhp. The chassis was also new but based on the one seen on the 1933 Speed Pilot and was ‘underslung’ going under the rear axle. A top speed of 70mph and economy of 24mpg was claimed in contemporary advertisements. This open tourer cost £288 when new and was a good quality and yet reasonably priced motorcar. This example is in good all round condition and is coming to the market for genuine reasons forming part of a deceased estate in the Channel Islands. Although having been stored in recent years, the car is running but any prospective purchaser should see ‘gentle re-commissioning’ as essential. We are aware of a minor water leak from a hose, as a result of storage. There is a selection of old MOTs and original manual with the car. There is a Channel Islands version of a log book but no current V5c with the car. Import duty has been paid on this car. Bidding is taking place on our sister site i-bidder.com Click here to bid

1610 GRISONE, Federico. Ordini di Cavalcare et modi di conoscere le nature de cavalla - Printed Appresso Andrea Muschio in Venetia: 1610. 4to. pp. [xiii], 164, 70, [11]. Two parts in one volume. Contemporary vellum, some small early worming. A very good copy. The first part offers fifty full-page woodcuts showing the different kinds of bits and harnesses while part two is distinguished by a full-page woodcut of a horse detailing the areas where veterinary problems could arise. Originally published in 1565 this was the first true manual of horsemanship of the Italian Renaissance, the author being greatly influenced by the discovery of the writing on this subject by the 4th Century BC Greek author Xenophon.. A native of Naples, the reputation of the riding academy of Naples was built on Grisone's service. He worked primarily with destriers or war horses and his training methods involved heavy curb bits and severe punishments. Despite the influence of Xenophon he did not appreciate the necessary harmony between horse and rider. Rather he believed horses to be vicious creatures whose spirit had to be broken. This led him to some barbaric acts including letting a cat tied by its back to a pole crawl all over the horse's belly and between its legs. One cannot underestimate the importance of his teaching, the book being widely translated throughout Europe. Editions in the original Italian are quite difficult to find. Provenance: The estate of Tony Sweeney
