OWEN ROBERT: (1771-1858) British Social Reformer. A.L.S., Mr. Owen, in the third person, three pages, folio, Hotel d`Angleterre, Paris, 26th July 1837, to the President, Director and Secretary of the Society Francaise de Statistique Universalle, thanking them for the honor conferred upon him with the presentation of a medal the previous evening. Owen states that he accepted the medal `as a mark of the kindness of the Society to a stranger coming to Paris who proposes to ameliorate the conditions of the human race by a change to be affected without creating violence, injustice or evil of any kind` and continues `...for nearly fifty years he has been deeply interested in the general statistics of the world & especially in those of Great Britain, Ireland & the United States of North America, that during the same period he has been actively & alternatively engaged in the departments of producing wealth & in its distribution, in education, or forming the character from infancy to maturity, & in the immediate government of considerable masses of population` further adding that his experience and learning has allowed him to form `a machine with new powers physical & mental which is capable of being made to perform, with the least manual labour & most pleasure, all the business of human life much better than heretofore it has ever been executed & at the same time, most beneficially for every individual in every country` and offering to present his ideas in more detail to the Society. Accompanied by the original envelope, hand addressed and signed (`Robert Owen`) by the reformer. Housed in an attractive presentation folder.
