2005 Mercedes SLK 350Reg. no. KS54 VRRChassis no. WDB1714562F051921Engine no. 2729633002970SThe second generation of Mercedes’ retractable hardtop sports car, the SLK, was launched for 2004, and the distinctive front-end styling was a tribute to the Formula 1 cars of that era. The new car was longer and wider than the old model, and made use of stiffer steel, giving a 46% increase in torsional rigidity with the roof down – the handling was therefore considerably improved. In addition, the SLK’s most important feature – the retractable hardtop – was improved, now taking just 22 seconds to raise or lower itself. New engines were offered as well, including the 3.5 litre V6 found in this example. For 2005, this engine produced 268bhp, enough for a 0-60 time of 5.4 seconds and a top speed of 155mph.This example is a rare 6-speed manual car; most SLK350s were fitted with a seven-speed automatic gearbox. A well-looked-after example with two previous owners, it is still in very good all-round condition and was serviced by Mercedes-Benz of Salisbury at 62,000 miles. Recently fitted with four new Continental tyres, it come with an MOT until December 2020, plus some bills and a V5c.

2004 MG TFReg. no. WN04 FZBChassis no. SARRDWBKC4D628814Engine no. 18K4FP27126446Reviving the name used for the TF Midget in the 1950s, MG launched the new TF in 2002. An updated version of the F that had been in production since 1995, it was actually quite different from that car; the main change was the abandonment of the Hydragas suspension setup in favour of conventional, more reliable coil springs. The body was now 20% stiffer than before, and revised intakes and camshafts meant the 1.6 or 1.8 K-Series engines produced more power. Cosmetic changes brought the appearance into the 21st century, and more into line with the rest of MG-Rover’s range. With good performance and handling, plus a somewhat surprising 4-star Euro NCAP safety rating, the TF was a popular model, selling just over 39,000 units until 2005, when MG-Rover’s crippling financial problems finally ended with the company’s sad demise. This 2004 TF 1.8, with the 5-speed manual gearbox, is in good all-round condition, and comes with an MOT until May next year, plus a V5C.

1936 Singer 9 Le Mans Sports ‘Buttercup’Reg. no. APW 971Chassis no. 5386Engine no. 11535Founded in 1905 by bicycle manufacturer George Singer, the firm marketed its first car in 1906, a twin cylinder 15hp. In the immediate period post WW1 the only model to be offered was the Singer 10 but in 1922 a 15hp, 6 cylinder was introduced. By 1928 Singer had grown to become Britain's third largest car maker after Austin and Morris. Singer was not noted for its sporting ambitions but entered into a flirtation with motorsports in the 1930s that took it to one of the iconic races, Le Mans. At the core of the story was the ohc four created for the Singer. Enlargement of this engine's displacement resulted in the 972cc Nine series. Among the cars in the series were the Sports models, a coupe and a four-seat open car on a lowered chassis. These were soon accompanied by a Le Mans 2-seater.  According to The Beaulieu Encyclopaedia of the Automobile, "Encouraged by reliable performances in the 1934 Le Mans race, Singer prepared a team of lightweight 2-seaters for 1935." These cars could hit 90mph. With that top speed the Company won the Light Car Club Relay at Brooklands and again finished at Le Mans. Shortly after Singer closed their competition department although some cars were still campaigned by private owners.Buttercup, as this Singer is known, is a well-known trials car within the VSCC. It was for many years owned by Singer expert Ian Blackburn. He ran the Singer 9 workshop and wrote the definitive workshop manual for the Singer 9. Ian bought the car in 1962 for a reported £15 and owned it for over 50 years. He campaigned it for many years in VSCC trials and with other use it's reputed to have covered over 250,000 miles. Included in the file are many photographs of Buttercup storming up hills on VSCC events. In 1969 Ian wrote 'the hydraulic brakes are first class and road holding is of an order that cheap cars still can't emulate, though the ride is a bit lively’.    The car is mechanically good. It features many of Ian’s tweaks and modifications, as it was technically the development car for ‘The Nine Workshop’. The bodywork and interior, however, bring a whole new meaning to the word ‘patina’ – Buttercup can only really be described as ‘oily rag’ – she won’t win any concourse events, but you’ll certainly have lots of fun along the way.Offered for sale with a current V5, a history file with a wealth of photos and two VSCC medals the car will offer someone a lot of fun on VSCC events as well as being welcome in the Singer Club.

1978 Lotus Esprit S1 Type 79 – Chassis no. 31Reg. no. CUI 2004Chassis no. 7801/0310GEngine no. CC7770313629The development of the Esprit started in 1971 when Lotus boss Colin Chapman met with Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign to discuss creating a successor for the Europa. Giugiaro got to work, but Chapman was disappointed with the first ¼ scale model and called an early halt to the work. Undeterred, Giugiaro created a full-sized prototype on a stretched Europa chassis, which was exhibited on the Italdesign stand at the 1972 Turin Motor Show. The positive reception for this vehicle changed Chapman’s mind, and the project was back on. Christened the Esprit, the new car was launched at the Paris Motor Show in October 1975, production starting in June 1976. Giugiaro’s ‘folded paper’ styling was new, but the construction of the car was classic Lotus; a steel backbone chassis sported a fibreglass body, there were disc brakes all round, inboard at the rear, and a 160bhp longitudinally-mounted 2-litre Lotus 907 engine sat behind the passenger compartment, driving the rear wheels through a Citroen-sourced 5-speed manual transaxle. This configuration meant a low weight of around 900kg, plus excellent weight distribution. The result was a car that handled superbly, and S1 Esprits are still viewed by many as having the best steering of any version of the long-running model. This S1 Esprit is in excellent all-round condition; a thorough restoration was completed eight years ago, and since then the car has remained unused. During the restoration, the body was completely removed from the chassis and repainted, and a completely new interior was fitted. The engine was completely rebuilt, a stainless-steel exhaust was fitted, and the brake pipes were renewed. The heater matrix, oil cooler, fuel tanks and wheels were all refurbished. Now, due to the length of time it has been unused, some recommissioning would be wise before road use. It comes with a workshop manual, some photographs, further history and bills, plus an old-style logbook and a current V5C.
